Functional Assessment and Positive Behavior Support with Students with Autism in School and Community Settings ph M Lucyshyn, Ph.D.

April 14 & 15, 2005 Radisson Hotel Indianapolis AirportIndianapolis, Indiana

Presented By:Indiana Resource Center for AutismIndiana Instituteon Disability and CommunityIndiana's University Centerfor Excellence on DisabilitiesIndiana University

OVERVIEW

The workshop will introduce participants to a Positive Behavior Support (PBS) approach to supporting students with autism who engage in problem behavior in school and community settings. A collaborative approach to developing a personal profile, to conducting a functional assessment, and to designing a positive behavior support plan for individual students will be described and illustrated. The focus will be on improving important routines in the school and community that are unsuccessful due to problem behaviors, such as transitions to school, academic lessons, and recess time. Emphasis will be on team members working together as partners to design behavior supports that are effective and a good fit with implementers and settings. Small group exercises will provide an opportunity to practice the approach. Handouts will include articles about PBS with children with autism in school and community settings.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

This workshop is for general and special education teachers, family members, general and special education administrators, speech language pathologist, psychologists, occupational and physical therapists, and others interested and involved in the education and support of students across the autism spectrum.

Specific objectives are to empower team members to: (a) develop a personal profile for the focus student; (B) conduct a functional assessment; © develop a positive behavior support plan linked to assessment results; and (d) implement positive behavior supports in the context of problematic routines and activities in the school or community. While focused on students across the autism spectrum, this content is relevant for anyone working or living with someone with problem behavior.
