Guest guest
This is our experience with MRDD family resource dollars and what has been told to me by my support administrator. Each family is eligible for about $1,000 or $1,500 a year (not sure which) of family resource dollars. And yes, it is for respite, camp and other needs AT HOME related to the child's disability. What you can use the money for depends on the age of the child. If your child is school age, it is then the responsibility of the school to provide therapy services, and family resource dollars cannot be used for those purposes. When my child was younger than school age (under 3), we were able to access some family resource money to help offset speech therapy. Now that he is school-age, we cannot access it to fund therapies. However, if you have a need AT HOME, you can access family resource dollars to pay for O.T. things like a weighted vest, trampoline, etc. But, you have to have either your school O.T. or the MRDD O.T. recommend it and fill out the proper forms. Our school O.T. is familiar with the family resource form and gladly fills one out for us for items we agree will help my son again, AT HOME. When dealing with your S.A., as like anything, the squeeky wheel gets the grease. You have to stress that you have an urgent need AT HOME, because your child is, for example, jumping off the stairs repeatedly, endangering himself, and he needs a more appropriate outlet, like a trampoline. The S.A. won't just sign off on it, they will most likely make a MRDD O.T. referral, where the O.T. comes in on a consultative basis and says, yes your child needs these things. (Or work with your school O.T. if school age). Hope this helps. Feel free to email me too. --- In , " Eisengart " <cdleers@a...> wrote: > I have a question. > Where does Family Resource money come from? > Who gets to decide how it is spent? > They say we can only use ours now for is respite and camp. Guest guest
Hi-- I have used the money for an adapted gymnastics class. Some people have used it for Music Therapy and Horse-back riding. I have even heard of people using it for karate. If you can justify it---you probably can get it. Also---for any of you that have kids less than 3---the state has put into place a new funding source for things like OT, PT, etc. It starts Oct. 1st. It is essentialy the payor of last resort, but if you use up all your visits with your insurance and MRDD doesn't provide the service and it is on the IFSP, they may be able to pay for this. There are income restrictions, but you can use out-of-pocket medical expenses to make your income appear smaller. If anyone is interested, I can give whatever details that I can, or you should contact your service coordinator. Laurie Kowalski
