Guest guest
Liz, in the research, inulin in a " bolus " with food seemed to perform better than inulin with fluid, especially in those with tricky digestion. You'll find out pretty quick what your dose is going to be. Expect some gas, as lactobacilli as a group (with exceptions) produce plenty of carbon dioxide, until the bifidobacteria become more prominent in the culture. Bifidobacteria produce (with exceptions) mainly fatty acids. It's better to take prebiotics with the probiotic. The object is to maximise contact time between the probiotic organisms colonising the bowel lining and the inulin, and fluids move kinda fast. Fecal slurry would show bifidobacteria dominant long before and maybe as a first step towards changing the colonies on the bowel lining. Of particular interest here is that many probiotics produce short chain fatty acids that are direct food for bowel lining cells, just as longer chain fatty acids, the MCT oils, are direct food for most other cells. These short chain fatty acids, particularly butyrate, which is also in milk fat, even at a few grams a day has been used to " cure " Crohn's disease and has been studied as bowel cancer-preventive. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11077326 all good, Duncan > > > > > > Hi Duncan, > > > > > > thanks so much for all the information, I will look up all the links you provided. For my dad, i've heard that whey is good, but had not gotten around to checking into it further, so I will do so now...he is eating well but just does not gain weight. > > > > > > Starting yesterday, i'm going on a mostly vegetarian low carb diet, and also doing a 2 week colon cleanse. I'm determined to kickstart my thyroid and adrenals to work again...have already had all mercury taken out of my mouth, but still need to do DMSA chelation since I think heavy metals is a key factor behind the gut issues and also yeast etc. (did I mention I have celiac disease too?) I will check into inulin and MCT oil. I take probiotics but only sporadically. For now, i'm cutting out the coc. oil except for cooking. > > > > > > appreciate the tips from you and from Chuck!
