Unplanned Hip Replacement

Hi there,

I have enjoyed reading all the messages on this site and finding out

about other people's experiences. My situation is that I had a fall and

fractured my hip. When I was x rayed they decided that the best option

would be a total hip replacement, which was a bit of a shock. I had

experienced some stiffness in the hip, but nothing that was causing

significant problems and only lasted for a couple of minutes.

At the moment I am post op 35 days, but I am only partially weight

bearing using crutches. I was told that my recovery time would be about

twelve weeks. It often concerns me whenm I hear of others who are

walking without any aids at about six weeks and evemn returning to work.

I am not having any particular problems, but I still have quite a lot

of swelling and I wonder if any of you can tell me how long you had

swelling around the incision. I checked that the scar was OK with

practice nurse yesterday and she seems to think that it is fin

Tomorrrow, I have my first appointment at hospital with phsyio, so I am

hoping that I will be able to put more weight on my leg and do more

walking.

I have had a strange experience when I tried to put on my normal shoes

as they seem to have become too big for me. I'm not sure whether this

is because I have not been walking as much as normal, or could it be

the compression stockings that I still have to wear for another 7 days.

Also, when I am completely recovered will I be able to wear shoes with

high heels which I only tend to wear occasionally for social occasions.

I would love to hear from other people who have had a hip replacement,

as a result of a fall.

Bye for now,

Barbara
