I was wondering if there is anyone out there who has hit a plateau at the

end of their 2nd month. I have been on a plateau for almost three weeks now

and had surgery done on 1/24/03. I lost 35 pounds at 2 months and not

budged since. Am I doing something wrong? Some input would be helpful.

ohhhhh suzanne.... suzanne, suzanne, suzanne.... the plateau...yes

my dear.... we have plateaus.. they are the most awful little troll-

inspired things on earth. i moaned and groaned and cried and about

worried this list to DEATH over my many plateaus...

the good news is this ... it IS normal...your body has to " catch up "

i had half a dozen plateaus and i can tell you this ...i did SO WELL

with my weight loss! when all was said and done, i met my goals and

went from size 26 to a 6-8....10 in jeans.

ahhhh

life is good!

It sounds like you are doing just fine. That is good weight loss even

though you hit a plateau you did something about it. Keep up the good

work.

I believe in a body's " set point " (I think that's what it's called)

where your body gets used to being at a certain weight and so it's

hard to get below or above that without long term changes in

eating/exercising. That's a theory that's been around a while- and I

think there's some validation to it-

Anyone else?

Two words. WATER RETENTION. If you were eating lots of food

(especially carbs), then you would have retained lots of water.

Possibly you added a pound or so of fat back on too, but nothing you

couldn't get rid of with a week of exercising and clean eating. Yay

for you! :) But, you definitely didn't lose 5 pounds of fat in a

week. hehe, sorry to say :) Isn't it great that you could take that

week off and get right back to your C1 finish weight in only a

week? :)

Hey there,

You pretty much guessed it. It wasn't like 5 lbs of fat (which is

impossible to gain in a week). You most likely had 5 lbs of water on you

and shed it quite readily once you returned to working out and drinking your

water.

If its any help, I've lost 40 lbs. since January following the weight

watchers plan. I haven't really added much exercise, except some bike

riding, walking and yoga.

Its an easy plan and I'm seeing good, yet slow and steady, results. I have

about 25 more to go.

Good luck,

D.

I'm crazy for cross stitch!

exactly why I'm not progressing.

I haven't tried Weight Watchers in awhile now, but my daughter is on it right now. From what she says and from what I've read about the "point system" they are now using, it seems llike it would be easier to follow now. Also, my daughter has a book that she purchased from them that gives the points of foods at various chain restaurants. As I don't cook all that much, that appeals to me. I am thinking of giving it another try. Also, so many of my acquaintances have had very good results on Atkins-type low-carb diets, especially when combining that with the supplements that are carb or starch blockers (the ones that have "phase two" or white kidney bean extract or concentrate in them). Of course, I haven't checked into these so don't know if the supplements would be something that those of us with heart problems could take. According to my friends, the weight just falls off (sounds great--almost too good to be true, so maybe it isn't). And the supplements are ephedra and mahuang-free, which is a plus. It isn't obvious to anyone but my daughter that she needs to lose any weight at all. I would like to lose maybe forty or fifty pounds, if I could do so safely.

I think if you can get a " buddy " to go w/you it helps... and finding

the " right " leader is a must... if you don't connect w/the person

heading up the meetings you're certainly not going to have much

success... but going to meetings and weighing in each week, w/a buddy

and liking the leader worked for me to the tune of losing 80lbs and

keeping it off for over 5 yrs 'til all heck broke out w/my daily

schedule and then I found every pound I lost... but I'm going to lose

it once again, I swear I am!!!

I'd really recommend WW for you then - they're changing their points system

a little bit starting in September, so that would be the best time to sign

up. I've had great results with it so far, and look forward to getting to

goal.

Is it 8 x the weight you are now? Or 8 x the weight you want to be? Say, for

example, I weigh 150 pounds, am I only allowed 1200 calories a day? That doesn't

seem like enough, especially if one is working out an hour a day and trying to

have smalls meals 5-6 times a day. I'm SO confused!!!!

What is the general recipe for weight/muscle gain for Os?

Has anybody tried the ABCDE plan that Dr. D mentioned one time in his

column for this purpose?

You would be eating 19 oz of protein to begin with daily. You will get

90 gr of carbs & 50 gr of fat + 80oz of water. If still hungry add more

fat.

8x your current weight.

Working out - don't lift too heavy.

Anything else?

=====================

Vicki..love...you need to calm down. Get off the scales and accept

the fact that what will be, will be. It really does not matter if

you lose 15 pounds in 30 days or 50 pounds...your body is going to

do what it's going to do. If you are a 15 pound loser in the first

month you may be one of those that just lose slow but steady. If

you lose 50 pounds in the first month you may be one who loses great

for a couple months and then hits a brick wall for 3 months. The

only thing you can do is follow the basic guidelines of our dietary

requirements.

Lead with protein

Avoid sugar and simple carbs

Drink water

Take your suppliments

Exercise

Vicki...Having met you and seeing your body type...if you follow the

basic guidelines I can guarentee...YES GUARENTEE...that in a year

from now you will be considered a normal weight...in 2 years you

will be considered thin.

So take a " chill pill " sweety...it's going to happen....don't start

driving yourself crazy with the scales. Because sometimes the scales

will thrill you but at other times they WILL drive you crazy,

frustrate you, depress you.

Hugs

Jo

aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh- my daily kick in the butt- i needed that. ive

only heard of a few people needing surgery again because of lack of

weight loss but i am confident i wont be going through that because

Dr Z gets it right the first time. i know you have to eat more to

lose more and right now i cant eat a whole lot- although i am able

to eat more now.........YAY!!!!!!!!! the 4th week was a turning

point for me. thing is, i eat alot of crackers though to soak up

acid so the carbs are higher now than they will be in the future.

thank you for the butt kickin..............just what i needed

Vicki! Your weight loss is GREAT! Don't change a thing -- except -- RELAX!

You don't need to diet...let the weight loss come as it will...just sip, sip,

sip, walk, walk, walk, and do as much protein as you can!

Hi Vicki,

My best advice? Stay off that danged scale! You will drive

yourself nuts getting on that thing more often than once a month.

Your weight can fluctuate quite a bit from day to day and the scale

is the least reliable indicator of your fat loss. Try taking your

measurements weekly instead.
