For the first time, the Institute will be providing two distinct tracks from which participants can choose sessions. Each track is intended to provide high quality information to the participants but at different levels. The first track is composed of sessions that are intended to provide the participants with general information, build a knowledge base about autism spectrum disorders and provide a general understanding of the disorder. Basic strategies and techniques are incorporated throughout these sessions. The second track is intended for those participants who already have that general base of understanding of the disorder and of effective strategies. These sessions are intended to provide an advanced understanding and application of those strategies. The second track sessions will help to expand your repertoire and to assist you in developing problem-solving skills. Each session will be marked as Track One or Track Two. Monday, June 13, 2005 8:00am-8:30am Registration 8:30am-11:30am Keynote Presentation Building Bridges: Supporting Young People with ASD Jeanne and Lyons Jeanne is the very proud mom of . She is also a musician who writes songs for kids with ASD. is an adolescent with ASD and a budding botanist. You may have seen a few years ago as a guest on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. They will share with you their journey of building bridges together. 11:30am-1:00pm Lunch (on your own) 1:00pm-2:30pm Track One What is Autism Spectrum Disorder? Presenter: Brown, PhD Dr. Brown is the Outreach Coordinator for the O’Leary Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders. She has been a consultant in areas related to ASD for 20 years, been instrumental in creating family support networks in the region and is the parent of a son with ASD. This session will provide the participants with information about autism spectrum disorder and how it affects children in their development. Information about resources for parents and professionals will be provided. 1:00pm-2:30pm Track Two Current Research: What Might Cause ASD? Presenter: Molloy, MD Dr. Molloy is on staff at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical center in both the O’Leary Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders and the Center for Epidemiology and Biostatistics. This session will provide participants with information about the most current research related to ASD. New studies and the status of previous work will be reviewed. 2:45pm-4:15pm Track One and Track Two Combined Update on Treatment, State of the State of ASD Presenter: Patty Manning-, MD Dr. Manning is the clinical Director at the O’Leary Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders. This session will provide participants with the “state of ASD†in the region and in Ohio. Current national and local trends in diagnosis and treatment will be reviewed. Tuesday, June 14, 2005 8:00am-8:30am Registration 8:30am-11:30am Track One Intervention Methodologies for Children with ASD Presenters: Donna Murray, Ph.D Dr. Murray is Director of Treatment at the O’Leary Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders. Brown, Ph.D Dr. Brown is the Outreach Coordinator for the O’Leary Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders. This session will explore many of the methods used most frequently by parents and educators to support students with ASD. Ideas to incorporate strategies from a variety of methods will be discussed. “Best practice†will be reviewed. Track Two Successful Sensory Strategies in the Classroom Presenters: Joan Dostal, OTR/L, Jill OTR/L Both work at the Cincinnati Occupational Therapy Institute (COTI). Successfully incorporating sensory strategies in the classroom is an ongoing process of developing, evaluating and modifying the interventions. Participants will use an interactive approach to develop the skills needed by all team members to actively participate in the process of meeting the sensory needs of children on the spectrum. Participants will be encouraged to discuss their successes and challenges in utilizing sensory strategies with the group. 11:30am-1:00pm Lunch (on your own) 1:00pm-4:15pm Track One The Basics of Structured Teaching: TEACCH Presenter: Rubin, Ph.D. Dr. Rubin is currently on faculty at Miami University and has a private practice specializing in consultation, evaluation and assessment of students with developmental disabilities, particularly students with ASD. Participants will learn the importance of a structured environment for persons with ASD and learn effective intervention strategies within that environment. The TEACCH or Structured Teaching approach will be highlighted. Track Two Developing Social Skills Presenters: Bullock, M.Ed. is a Certified School Psychologist from the Forest Hills School District. TKacz, MS, SLP, CCC is a licensed speech/language pathologist in the Forest Hills School District. Kim Singleton-Filio, MS, SLP, CCC Kim is the Integrated ASD Specialist for the Lakota Local School District. This session will provide participants with ideas, strategies and models used in the development of social competencies with children with ASD. Wednesday, June 15, 2005 8:00am-8:30am Registration 8:30am-11:30am Track One The Importance of Communication Strategies Presenters: Terri Messerschmidt, MS, SLP, CCC Bridget Kent, MS SLP, CCC Both are on staff at the O’Leary Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders. This session is designed to address the communication/social skills needs of children with ASD. Participants will learn about the importance of communicative competence for children with ASD. Some specific strategies will be discussed. Track Two-This is a full day presentation Behavioral Strategies: Behavior Assessment and Management – Applications Presenters: Rena Sorensen-Burnworth, Ph.D. Foti-Hoff, Psy.D. Kroeger-Geoppinger, Psy.D. All are on staff at the O’Leary Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders and work with families, schools and private providers to develop and support behavior intervention plans. This session will provide participants the opportunity to practice skills in functional assessment, data collection, and behavior management planning through the use of hands on activities. Participants will be involved in video tape analysis of behaviors of children with autism spectrum and will practice data collection and functional analysis skills. Previous training in functional assessment is recommended. 11:30am-1:00pm Lunch (on your own) 1:00pm-4:15pm Track One Social Issues for Adolescents with ASD Presenter: Magnus Kopnick, Ph.D. Dr. Kopnick is a private educational and behavioral consultant specializing in the support of individuals with ASD and severe behaviors. This session will explore more in depth the issues specific to adolescents with ASD such as friendships, relating to friends of the opposite sex, dating, puberty and sexuality. Participants will learn about the changing social needs of persons with ASD as they get older. Specific intervention strategies will be discussed. 1:00pm-4:15pm Track Two This is a continuation of the full-day Behavioral Strategies workshop listed above. Thursday, June 16, 2005 8:00am-8:30am Registration 8:30am-11:30am Track One Understanding the Sensory Connection Presenter: Joan Dostal OTR/L Joan is the Pediatric Coordinator and Co-owner of Cincinnati Occupational Therapy Institute (COTI). She has 27 years of experience in the field and specializes in Sensory Integration. This session will focus on the analysis of behavior of students with ASD from a sensory perspective. Participants will learn about the importance of understanding the sensory needs of children with ASD and will learn effective intervention strategies. 8:30am-11:30am Track Two-This is a full day presentation Structured Teaching-Taking It To The Next Level Presenters: Christi Carnahan, B.S. Strategies to create structure in regular classes and within classrooms with many differing disabilities will be explored. 11:30am-1:00pm Lunch (daily on your own) 1:00pm-4:15pm Track One Understanding Behavior of Students with ASD Presenter: Dr. Rene Sorenson-Burnworth, Ph.D. Dr. Sorensen-Burnworth is on staff at the O’Leary Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders, Division of Developmental Disabilities, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. A fundamental part of supporting students with ASD is identifying behaviors that interfere with learning and designing interventions that work. This session will be spent examining core skills for decreasing behavior problems. Participants will learn strategies dealing with functional communication, waiting, increasing compliant behaviors, following a schedule and increasing independence. 1:00pm-4:15pm Track Two This is a continuation of the full-day Structured Teaching workshop listed above Friday, June 17, 2005 8:00am-8:30am Registration 8:30am-4:15pm Track One and Track Two. This is a full day workshop designed for all participants. Judy Reinhold, RN, MSN, CPNP Judy is the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at the O’Leary Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders This all day session is designed to provide comprehensive information about Asperger Syndrome, its diagnosis, treatment and impact on the family. Participants will learn effective strategies for use in the classroom and at home. General Information Morning sessions daily will begin at 8:30am until 11:30am. Afternoon sessions will begin promptly at 1:00pm until 4:15pm. Coffee and tea will be provided daily. Lunch is on your own.
