Just to confirm, both my dentist, and doctor, say a positive 'no' to

anti-biotics before dental treatment - even when I recently had a large

molar extracted.

Hi Lin and everyone

I suppose its about balancing the risk of an infection getting into your

implant against the overuse of antibiotics.

I've never heard of anyone treated in the UK -NHS or private being told to

take antibiotics before the dentists but pretty well all the people I know

from America are. So I guess that we (I'm UK) see the risk as lower then

they do in the USA.

Be interesting to find out more. I'll ask a friendly surgeon

I was put on antibiotics before my knee op, which seems sensible. But

I doubt its because of the fear of litigation, we don't sue in Australia any

where near other countries in the world, and we take antibiotics, its in all

the written studies nothing to do with being sued. I am rushing now as I am

on my way to the surgeon and I will drill him again.

When I went to get my hip replaced, the hospital was very insistent that my

teeth were in a good state before they would perform the surgery - I have heard

of people being told to go away and come back in a few months when their teeth

were sorted out!

My (UK) dentist says that she generally does not give antibiotics as routine for

minor stuff (cleaning, fillings etc) unless you have mouth that is in a bad way

(bad gum problems, bad hygiene etc).

She is very well informed, and follows NICE guidelines (National Institute for

Clinical Excellence).

She says if she ever has to do anything big ( root canal, tooth capping) she

would give me antibiotics, and if I was nervous of infection she would leave the

decision up to me ( she's so sweet).

Anyway, I'd be inclined to follow her advice.

What I would like to know is, is there any evidence of cases of infection of

prostheses after non-antibiotic dental visits? It would be really good for us to

know, to help us make this imortant decision!

I've written to my surgeon, if I get a reply I will let you all know what he

says!

I make my own Colloidal Silver and have been using it for about 10 years or

more. It does not prevent infections but is used after I get an infection

to speed the recovery time. I plan on taking Amoxicillin prior to dental

work to prevent infections. Silver plus antibiotics can both be used

together. Silver kills germs on contact but does nothing to prevent the germs

from

growing. It is an after the fact treatment only.

@ Brickey: Thanks!

I think I will follow in your foot steps.

I will be taking a run of Probiotics after the Colloidal Silver and

Amoxicillin to cover all bases.

From what i have read, colloidal silver is toxic. It can accumulate in organs,

and it is likely to interfere with your immune system, besides the potential to

turn your skin a weird gray/blue color. Search on " Karason " and " colloidal

silver " for an image.
