Guest guest
I know I am being dense, , but why would you want your ball/socket arrangement to be reversed? How does it work? BARB Re: new here Jeff, if you are so inclined will you explain the difference in a shoulder replacement and a reverse shoulder replacement? Guest guest
Hi Barb, Well answered your first question so well, I'll attempt this one. feel free to correct any inaccuracies. They do the reverse replacement when you have no rotator cuff to work with. The tendons that make up the rotator cuff hold the ball in place and when they are gone there is nothing to hold it. At least that's how it was explained to me. Generally I've been told that after one rotator cuff repair there is little chance of a second repair working and that's why I needed the replacement. Guest guest
Thank you, Jeff....... Then the shoulder does not have a ball and socket/cup like the hip? Or just a smaller one without the obvious long neck on the hip ball? Guest guest
Barb, No, there is a ball and socket, but it's in reverse position from the normal alignment. The ball is attached to the clavicle and the socket is on top of the arm. I hope that's clear. Guest guest
Hi , You are correct, it's the biceps that you use to raise your arm. Hope all is continuing well with your rehab. Sorry I forgot to say that because there is no tendon there for you to be able to raise your arm, the reverse shoulder replaces this tenon by you using your biceps to raise your arm instead of the rotator cuff, actually I think it biceps. it might be another muscle group. Which is why surgeons say its not as easy to recover from as you have no tendons to work with. its not a common operation. -- Re: sorry jeff and reverse shoulder.for Barb.
