Just in case any of you were planning on attending the workshop by Dr. Joanne Cafiero on autism, the date and location have been changed. It's an expensive day, but she's a fairly reknown speaker. I'm not positive, but parents may be able to get a scholarship for the registration fee through the Cuyahoga Special Education Service Center (440-885-2685) or Family Resource Services at MR/DD (if you already have a case worker from MR/DD). Information about the workshop is below.

Please note the date and location change for Dr. Cafiero's workshop. They've provided very short notice for this, but they told Connie son that Dr. Cafiero will be back in our area sometime later this year. Hopefully we'll have more advance notice so that you can plan to send staff or attend if you are interested.

AAC and Autism - Research to Practice - Joanne M.

Cafiero, Ph.D.

Parents and practitioners often find teaching and

engaging Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders

(ASD) to be among the most challenging undertakings of

their lives. This workshop will detail research-based

practical communication and participation strategies

for individuals with ASD. The National Academy of

Sciences report, Educating Children with Autism, of

which Dr. Cafiero was a participating author, will be

used to demonstrate research to practice protocols

that interface with augmentative and alternative

communication.

Workshop participants will learn the tools and

strategies to implement communication, participation

and behavior management interventions for children and

adults with ASD in the home, school and community.

Some of the strategies detailed include, natural aided language, functional communication training, activity schedules and video modeling. In addition, exciting new research in the area of literacy learning for individuals with ASD will be presented in a research to practice model. Slides, videotapes, assessment tools and practitioner-friendly data collection tools will demonstrate each methodology. Participants will learn the latest communication and technology based strategies and supports that will dramatically enhance the lives of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Come home with ideas, tools and strategies that will dramatically enhance your interactions with these special people. Research-based, innovative, practical strategies that promote engagement and communication for individuals with autism and other communication challenges.
