Hi ,

I wanted to wish you well and also give you some positive reasons to be grateful that you are finally having the esophagectomy. I had mine on October 1st, and I ate ribs, mashed potatoes and carrots yesterday. Today I had pork tenderloin, potatoes and asparagus with cheese sauce. A month ago I never would have been able to eat like I am now. It's small portions and frequent meals, but I can eat perfect! I am still quite sore from my thoracotomy, and I have a lot of stiffness and "pinching" where the muscles are healing, but no regrets whatsoever. I have had a bit of "dumping" after eating pasta, but I think it was just too heavy a meal or I had too much cheese in it. If anyone has any questions, I read the posts everyday because I'm not allowed to drive until October 30th.

The pain is well worth having the ability to eat again.

Good luck, and accept all the pain medication they are willing to give you!

Hi, Barbara.

I don't post often, but I wanted to wish you well & let you know that

I'll be keeping you in prayer. God Bless. I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Hey Ya'll,

I thought that I would catch everyone up on what's going on with me.

My family and I have currently moved into our new home in town so I

am not living out in the country anymore. I do miss the quiet.

I am finally going to have the thyroid surgery that I have been

needing. The surgeon is talking about a total thyroidectomy. I will

be the first in a long line of woman to have a total done. All the

other women in my family have had partial thyroidectomies.

Some more good news is that my mother who lives about six hours away

from me and that I haven't seen since May of last year will be here

on March 21st and will stay until after my surgery which will be on

March 24th. She will have to leave that day to make it back for work

but her boss was nice enough to allow her to have the one day since

she has just started her new job and is still in her 90 day

probational period.

I am really looking forward to having this done and over with. I

know that the doctors and I have tried everything that we could to

get this multi nodule goiter to stop growing but it is not. It is

now the size of my palm or atleast feels like it. Of course I am not

really happy about the surgery, but at least I won't feel so

restricted in my throat area. I will finally be able to eat things

like bread again!! Yea!

Well, I am hoping that everything is good with everyone. And wish me

luck and would like a few prayers said too since the last surgery

that I had which was my gallbladder didn't go so good since I had

internal bleeding resulting from the surgery. I don't want to be

bedridden for another three weeks like I was the last time.

Hi Barbara,

I do pray it all goes well.

I personally wouldn't have the surgery. You doctor is relying only on the

TSH, he need to look at Free's and symptoms. If you Free's are in the

bottom of " Normal " then you are probably not getting enough thyroid

replacement. It is a range so you can adjust to the upper end of the

range. The TSH suppressed is a very good thing. 75mg of thyroid

replacement is a small dose, that's like a starting dose. What are your

symptoms? If you can look at the thyroid symptoms check list and you still

have symptoms then you are undermedicated.

It's you choice, but I think your doctor is very wrong, too by the

numbers. I do understand how painful the goiter can be..but I don't like

the idea of unnecessary surgery.

Barbara,

My sister-in-law had the operation several years ago. It seems her

goiter was about the same size as yours and she hasn't had any more

problems since. I'm sure your doctor knows best about your special

condition and would not do any unnecessary surgery. It seems you are

having quite a few symptoms/difficulty in eating, etc..all goiters are

not the same. We all will be thinking of you this month. It will be

nice for you to be able to visit with your mother. I'm 73 years old,

but still miss the comfort my mother always gave me through tough

times. Best regards, Connie

-Barbara, I second what Connie told you. You will probably heal really

well, and enjoy life a lot more. And about mothers, have a great time

with her. I call my 78 year old mom at least 3 times a week. We both

can't travel to see one another anymore. But you know, she still lives

in the house I was brought up in, and it sure would be nice to go home

and be with mom for a while. Enjoy. We will all be praying for you.

Dear Kate,

My TSH level was considered high normal and my T3, T4 and the free

well they were above normal. I was placed on 75mg of synthroid for a

few months and the goiter continued to grow even though my TSH level

dropped from .5 to a .3.

Currently I am having problems with sleeping due to the pressure that

the goiter places on my neck when I sleep. I have to sleep with my

head tilted back so I can be comfortable enough to sleep and not feel

like my breathing is restricted. Besides not being able to eat

things such as bread, I have a hard time taking my meds if the pills

are too big. I use to be able to braid my own hair which I did at

night since my hair is long. But, because of the goiter I can no

longer do it since raising my arms causes me to feel like I am having

someone choke me.

If I wear a T-shirt I have to stretch the neck out so that I don't

feel it against my neck because it adds to the pressure I already

feel on my neck. And lets don't forget about the seat belt.

I appreaciate your concern. However, this is something that is

becoming very much needed. My family has a long history of

thyroidectomies. Every woman in my family has had a partial done.

My grandmother, bless her soul, actually had a goiter that by the

time that they got around to removing it - it had almost completely

grown around a lung.

The thyroid meds didn't stop the growth even though I was brought in

the normal range. They had to take me off of the med so that I could

have a radioactive test done, the one that you swallow the pill. I

forget what it is called.

In all reality I didn't really have any symptoms until the goiter

popped up. And that is really the only main symptom that I have had.

Do you own a home? You could refinance your home, you could get a personal loan, a carecredit loan, a medical loan, a credit union loan, a loan from friends or family. As for organizations that will actually pay for your surgery, that would be insurance only.

Has anyone paid for their surgery with a credit card? I am going to

put my surgery on a credit card. I got a very low interest rate thru

my Credit Union. Nina said I need to use Pay Pal which sounded fine,

but my daughter is concerned that Dr. A's pay pal acct address is

hotmail.com rather than a regular ISP address. Has anyone used this

payment recently? Debi

I did, I did it when I paid my deposit. It might look kind of odd but it is legit. I wondered the same thing when I was paying for the surgery. It's for real, honest. On Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 7:47 PM, debil7777 <debil7777@...> wrote:

,I looked into the financing that was offered by Dr. Aceves and the interest rate was higher than if you just go to a credit union or bank and get a loan. I don't know if you have any savings but, I borrowed against my savings and the interest rate was even better. I would think that now is as good as any for borrowing since the Fed lowered the interest rate. At any rate, good luck...you won't regret it.Colleen Surgery

Alecia,Do you have insurance? I don't think you could get it done in Mexico with insurance but, depending on BMI a lot of insurance companies will pay for the surgery. I didn't meet their BMI and didn't want to go through the counseling required in the States. So just went to Mexico. Good luck!!!Colleen
