Guest guest
Hi Lynn For weeks after my op I couldnt find any position where my leg was comfortable, other thanlying down - and then only on my back, with my knee propped up on a thin pillow! Sitting in my recliner chair I tried all sorts of combinations of cushions and pillows of varying sizes and shapes, constantly changing them around. I'd be comfortable for a while, then have to re-arrange them all! What worked one day wouldn't work on the next. I took a lot of pain relief, then got an infection in the knee that made things worse. Once I was able to walk around a bit it gradually eased off, mostly leaving me with some shin pain, and the tight 'ace bandage' effect. It took a lot of patience, which often ran out and I got quite ratty now and then, but eventually things became so much easier and I became glad I'd had the op. Could you try having a pillow under your legs. in case that helps? or just a thin cushion? I found that raising the knee slightly helped, and also by jamming a neck cushion between my leg and the arm of the chair got my knee into a more 'upright' position rather than having my foot leaning over to the side - this was often more comfy. 8 months on I still have some pain, but it's ignorable. I need to go for regular walks to ease it otherwise the tendons seem to tighten up and pull my muscles hard, which hurts. But it's a whole lot better than limping painfully all the time, and never being able to walk very far. I hope your own pain subsides soon, Good luck! Lin UK Please help! I'm a month post op having my knee replaced. I am so uncomfortable...the knee doesn't want to be up on the recliner, but it doesn't want to be down on the floor. I can walk around and instead of loosening up, it stiffens up, especially the back of the knee. I think I have what you can laughingly call " heebie jeebies " . Standing still is definitely not recommended. I'm exercising...especially when I can't take it anymore. My PT thinks the back of the knee strain is from the tourniquet...but a month later, it's still bothering me? I have some swelling, one spot in particular has had no change since surgery. I have a new kneecap, too, I guess it's like a button (probably would feel pretty odd to try to kneel on even when I'm further down the road.) I'm trying to wean off pain pills, but do take one at night when I have the nasty night pains and before my PT. Otherwise, I'm trying Tylenol. At this point, I'm thinking Valium is more the thing! ) Please, someone, let me know if this is common or what!!! Guest guest
I've been having this very same problem only I had hip replacement surgery. I have tried different sizes and shapes of pillows at various different angles and still can't get a decent night's sleep. Even when I do sleep for say an hour, my dreams are bordering on nightmares. I don't know if this is the pain meds or my general discomfort. I'm at the four week mark now and my PT today said to give it 6-8 weeks before I find comfort. That wasn't really what I wanted to hear!
