Military develops unique food

Natick, MA, Jul. 21 (UPI) -- The U.S. military it touting a new dried food that can be hydrated with one's own urine.

However, if one doesn't have to " go " at supper time, then even the filthiest of muddy water will do, says the Combat Feeding Directorate, part of the U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center in Natick, Mass.

The magic in the new ration is a pouch with a filter that will remove 99.9 percent of bacteria and most toxic chemicals from the liquid used to re-hydrate it.

The new recipe is from the same agency that created the " indestructible sandwich, " which stays fresh for three years.

The aim in the new culinary marvel is to reduce the amount of water soldiers need to carry. One day's food supply of three meals, weighs more than 7 pounds, but that can be reduced to a few ounces in the dehydrated pouches, said spokeswoman Diane Wood.
