Can I ask you which partial knee surgery you are having?

I have an appt for Oct 8 to have either patello-femoral arthroplasty, or TKR,

depending on what things look like after he opens up my knee. But there are

other kinds of " partial " knee replacements - I was wondering which one you were

having.

My doc, Dr. Coons, uses spinal anesthesia only, which does not require a

breathing tube, for TKR. That doesn't mean you have to be " awake " - you can be

drowsy and out of it during the surgery, but he doesn't use general anesthesia.

Hi All -

Please remember me as this Wednesday I will have a partial KR. I was

okay until my pre-op visit and the nurse at the hospital told me that I

would have a breathing tube during surgery. I guess that is usual but

it kind of freaked me out. I will let you all know ASAP afterwards how

I am doing.

I wanted to be put to sleep and have general.every time.under spinal you

aren't necessarily totally out all the time and although you don't feel pain

you can feel pressure and hear all sorts of things.I didn't want to see,

hear, smell or sense anything!!!

LOL I can understand t hat although the doctors say general is more

threatening than local anaesthia. I thought I'd like the less

threatening one but my Dr said no and once I was in the hospital I

was definitely in favor of being totally out!

Hi, for my THR, I was put under general.  For the TKRs, I received nerve

blocks.  I was completely out and unaware for all surgeries.  I was afraid of

being awake or aware too and told that I wouldn't be.  During my pre-surgical

visit, my surgeon's office said that if the anesthesiologist offered the nerve

block to take it.  The benefit is that they left the blocks in while I was in

the hospital which provided pain relief during those first few days.  This is

especially beneficial when they get you out of bed and/or when they put you on

the repetitive motion machine.  or me, my nerve blocks catheters went down the

inside of my legs, entering by the groin.  It wasn't painful when they pulled

them out.  I was told that they often use the spine.  Since I needed to be on

blood thinners immediately after my surgery for prior DVTs, they wouldn't use my

spine.
