Hm. Well, this is kind of like a riddle, and I think everyone¹s answer will

be different. Here are my three:

1. Be prepared for an ordeal. Make no mistake, it will be an awful couple

of weeks, but it gets better very fast. Try not to lose perspective.

2. Do your rehab exercises faithfully. No matter what. If you¹re in a lot

of pain get adequate pain relief, but recovery depends very much on being

very very committed to rehab, whatever it takes.

3. This surgery is successful something like 95% of the time. YOU WILL WALK

WITHOUT PAIN once you heal. Hardly anyone, afterwards, says, ³I did this

too soon.² Everyone says, ³I can¹t understand why I waited so long.²

Agreed, Jeff - I didnt have that much ice so used a bag of frozen peas -

they moulded round the knee very well!

All great replies so far. I would just add the importance of using ice every

few

hours and elevating the leg as much as possible. It's most important to do

your

exercises religiously and don't be afraid of pain meds. For most they are

extremely important in the healing process.

I agree with everyone except for one major, I think, thing. I found that ice,

whether in expensive covered form or frozen peas, made my pain worse. I used

heat to get relief. This is something that a person has to work out for

themselves. I think the one thing we will all agree on is that we are all

different and reacted in many different ways to the pain, confinement and

therapy.

I completely agrre with that, I'm a lucky one I have a high tolerance for pain

so during my 5 day hospital stay I only had Vicodin

before my TP session I have been out 3 month on the 18th of this month and only

went thru a bottle of the Vicodin but the lower dosage

But true everybody is different, me when I have discomfort on my knee rest takes

care of it I just stop the exercising for a day and

feel great the next day. I have a Don Joy ice machine that helps a lot with the

swolling

And in response to number 3: Last year the beginning of Jan. we met relatives

in Pittsburg for a late chirstmas celebration. I was just 2 months out from my

TKR and was walking (hobbling) with a walker.

Yesterday, we had the same celebration. I spent a lot of time walking around

the restaurant, carrying my 30 pound grandson!

My only regret is that I didn't get them both done at the same time!
