Guest guest
Hi Florence! Welcome to the group. I hope we can give your son the info he need to make a good decision about where to move. I don't know much about the school systems in communities you mentioned, but I do work in Solon, so I can give some limited info. Solon seems to be a very diverse community. There are a lot of immigrants living there. Mostly eastern Europeans and asian indians from what I can tell. They have a very nice library and community center with an indoor and an outdoor swimming pool. If your granddaughter is on the GF-CF diet, there is a Mustard Seed in Solon where GF and CF items are always in stock. It seems like a very nice community to live in. I think Chagrin Falls is in the Kenston school district. My son's preschool ex-principal, Mrs. Philips, recently became the director of special education there. I haven't had the chance to talk to her about it, but I do know that the school has sufficient funds to take care of their students (unlike my school disctrict which had all their levies fail in the past two years). I consider Mrs. Philips to be an excellent and honest administrator and was disappointed to hear that she left our school district. If your son wants to know more about the Kenston School District, I would be happy to provide you with Mrs. Philips' contact info. My advice would be for your son to contact the school districts he considering moving to and to visit the classrooms your granddaughter might be attending. He'd probably get the best info that way. I have only heard good things about the Hudson School system, but Hudson is 2 towns south of Solon, and Route 8, the only freeway going north from Hudson, is pretty congested. Please let us know when your son is settled and if he needs advice on physicians. Guest guest
Hi Florence, There is a specific school in Cleveland for autistic children that is part of the Cleveland Clinic. There's also anther school in the Cleveland area that I can't recall the name of at this moment. I've heard good things about the schools so let me know if you are interested. When is your son moving into Ohio? Yours, n Hi n > My son and family will be relocating to your area. They are planning > to look at homes in Solon,Chagrin Falls or Orange. Guest guest
Hi My family and I just relocted to the Chagrin Falls area, from NYC area, at the end of november of this year. I have a six year old - mild to moderate autism,as well as a 2nd grade son, and 3 year old daughter. Before we moved I did some pretty extensive research on school districts in the area. I talked to or met with people from the following districts: Chagrin Falls, Brecksville, Mayfield Heights, Solon, Orange, Kenston, Shaker Heights. We settled on the Chagrin Falls district, because they had an absolutely wonderful program for my son. He is in a self contained classroom, but there are many mainstreaming options for him - as he develops. The director of pupil services in that district is Dr. and she was very helpful. The one point that I am unsure about is options at the middle school level, but Dr. I'm sure would be very helpful. In addtional the Chagrin Schools are excellent schools for the other children as well. Kenston school district, includes some of Chagrin Falls, as well as other towns, such as Bainbridge and Auburn. They have good programs as well. Solon and Orange also have good programs but I'm less sure about the specifics because I was mostly dealing with elementary level. I do believe that Orange and Chagrin and possible Solon as well, have somewhat of a cooperative relationship where children may be placed in another district, if there is a more suitable program. Shaker Heights has a good reputation for special ed, in particular they seem to be very in tune with the children's needs and working very well with parents to accomdate those needs. Other districts that I looked at was Mayfield - which has a great reputation and very knowlegeable staff. Mayfield is north of the chagrin area and a bit closer to downtown cleveland. (I don't know if commuting is an issue) Brecksville/Broadview School district was excellent as well. They were further south. I found in general, all the systems I looked at would have been good for my son. I know the communities of Brecksville and Mayfield have some great recereation programs for special needs too. If you need some names of pupil services directors, contact me at my email address. I found that all of them were very helpful. I also have some parent mentor names for some of the school districts, I didn't talk to all of them, but they give some good information from a parent's perspective. I'm still working on doctors here, but I have got a lead on a good developmental pediatrician. And I believe there is an autism group at the cleveland clinic. But I don't have first hand experience with them. If you need anything else, please don't hesitate to follow up. Guest guest
Florence, The Monarch School in Cleveland (Shaker Hts) is only up to 8th grade. Beachwood City Schools should be pretty good since Dr. Jensen (former director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Autism and head pediatric psychologist, specializing in autism, helped one family win a major lawsuit against the Beachwood City Schools a few years back for ABA programming. I'm sure it set a precedence for the district. Surely, a google search could pull up the specifics for that case. Sinclair now runs the Cleveland Clinic Center for autism, and there are some fine therpaists in that area as well. Good uck woth the move. > > Hi Florence, > > There is a specific school in Cleveland for autistic children that is part of > the Cleveland Clinic. Guest guest
Dear : Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. I will definiately pass on the information you have given me to my son and his family. They will not be moving for awhile but they want to get as much information as they can to help them in their decision as to where would be the best place to relocate. I do appreciate your help and as they get to firm up their plans more I am sure there will be a lot more questions. Thank you again for your help.
