Guest guest
Wow! Bummer! Well, I can speak to IT band tightness. Mine'll get so tight that it hurts a lot in my hip. You know the IT band stretch that PT's teach you how to do standing up? You put the foot of the affected leg behind the other foot so that the feet make a Z -- the toe of the foot of the bad leg is touching or pointing to or approximately pointing to the heel of the other foot. Knees not bent. There are two stretches: 1. Be about 2 ft out from a chair or a surface that you can put your weight on, with your bad leg away from the chair. Bend straight over toward the chair, bending at the hip joint. Don't do it too fast. I get a really good pull there. Hold for 20 sec. Some people prefer to do this a different way, by leaning IN toward a wall on the bad side, keeping the torso vertical. 2. Same foot position, but this time bend a little bit forward as you bend to the side. This moves the IT band forward of the greater trochanter & you stretch different muscles that may have contracted with the IT band & still stretch the IT band. Hold 20 sec. Don't overstretch. The muscles also get stretched and you might break too many fibers (get a strain). Repeat 1 & 2 for a total of 3 times. Repeat several times during the day. I usually feel immediate relief, not only of the hip pain but of the knee pain. The pain COULD originate inside your knee and the IT contraction be sympathetic to it. I'm having surgery Jan. 6 (was supposed to be today but I got caught up in a power play by my PCP). I have a horizontal tear in my meniscus and the surgeon wants to go in & see how bad it is & remove part of the meniscus if it's torn away or looks like it'll tear away soon. Also my second MRI (couple of weeks ago) showed a " small " chondromalacia, so I guess he'll smooth that out. If these don't work I'm going to insist on his cutting the IT band (later). I too have pains that move around. Sometimes they start medially, move through the patellar tendon, and then end up in the soft tissue lateral to but somewhat below the knee. What the hell is that? Also, I have extreme tenderness at the lower rim of my kneecap at all times, regardless of any other pain. I don't think it's patellar tendinitis, because the rest of the patellar tendon isn't tender. Ann Knee question OK I've been feeling pretty good the last month. Then today, I'm going down the stairs at the gym, and my knee starts to get aggrivated again. This is before my workout. THe pain was right at the platella tendon in front of the knee below the knee cap, and then it was kind of going on down the shin. Of course it got me mid flight on a 1 story high decend. So, I wiggled around my regular chopat brace, and rubbed at the platella tendon. Later in my workout I could tell that my either it was my IT band or hamstring were tight. I was tight on the lateral side, then back a little bit into the hamstring. I think Ann had mentioned she was noticing her pain knee get worse when her IT band gets tight. I'm really starting to think my initial knee " problem " and this flare up are because of the tight it band. What do you all think? I know when I hurt the knee last year, I was having IT band that was tight. Then when the knee thing happened. Pain was all over the knee, and the docs were confused because I had pain in tons of different places around the knee. I've been having the floating IT band tightness, feelings slightly behind the knee, and above the knee, here and there. The holiday season is killing me, since I'm not at the gym as regularly getting a good stretch. I was thinking about icing the knee and seeing about putting some heat on the IT band? What do you think about heating the IT band/quad area to loosen it up? Or is ice a better approach? Any thoughts. Thanks, Connie ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
I was reading this over and I just realized that you can't make a Z with two feet. Call it a V then. <chuckle> Ann Re: Knee question Wow! Bummer! Well, I can speak to IT band tightness. Mine'll get so tight that it hurts a lot in my hip. Guest guest
, All I know about knee pain is that using the step used to cause it for me. That was a long time ago, so I don't remember how bad the pain was. I think the solution was for me to take it easy, maybe I stayed away from the step for awhile, maybe when I went back to it I lowered the step, maybe I did easier step workouts. Can you tell I have a poor memory? I know sometimes knee pain is simply from the kneecap, I believe, being out, and once it pops back in, the pain goes away. That can sometimes be achieved by crawling on your hands and knees briefly. Hope this helps. How about icing it? Cheryl
Guest guest
Over the last few days, I have had some intense pain when doing some of my exercises, and sometimes it happens for no reason that I can tell. Last night I couldn't sleep, couldn't find a comfortable way to rest. My knee was replaced on 29 March. My PT came today and said it appears that I could have some fluid on my knee from the swelling on either side...it's been swollen, but he thinks the swelling has increased. One good thing is the area is clear. I can't recall reading anything about this. Has anyone experienced this as a possible problem? And if so, what was done about it? Thanks!
