Based on the manual, How to be a Para Pro: A Comprehensive Training Manual for Paraprofessionals, (a copy of which will be provided for each attendee), the central premise of this presentation is that an informed para can be the key ingredient in student success. The following topics will be addressed: the art and science of paraprofessional support: the importance of understanding the student and the disability: and the pitfalls to avoid. She is the author of several chapters and articles on ASD, as well as three books. A Passion to Believe, Trevor Trevor, a metaphor for children designed to increase the sensitivity of typical peers toward their classmates with special needs: and How to be a Para Pro: A Comprehensive Training Manual for Paraprofessionals. Her newest book entitled, How Well Does Your IEP Measure Up? is co-authored with Twachtman-Reilly, M.S., CCC-SLP. Dr. Twachtman-Cullen is a member of the “Resident Expert†team for the international website Autism Today, and also serves on the international advisory board for the Virtual Autism Clinic. She is the editor-in-chief of the Autism Spectrum Quarterly (www.ASQuarterly.com), the magajournalTM for autism that combines the substance of a professional journal with the readability and interest of a magazine. Dr. Twachtman-Cullen serves on several professional advisory boards, including the Panel of Professional Advisors of the Autism Society of American, the Asperger Syndrome Coalition of the United States (ASC-US), the Asperger Syndrome Parents Education Network (ASPEN), MAAP Services, Inc., and the College Internship Program.
