Guest guest
Hi Lynn, It's only two weeks! Yes, it is quite normal to have the kind of pain you described. You should be taking your pain pills regularly still! No one is giving out medals for withstanding TKR pain this month. Yesterday, I sat in an ordinary kitchen chair and when I got up, I must have put too much weight on my right knee. I saw stars and it brought tears to my eyes, On a 1-10 pain scale, it was about a 15. It was at the top of the knee, that band of quad muscle that goes across the bottom of the thigh. It woke me throughout the night. Today the whole knee hurts. Tomorrow my PT comes to work with me, and in trying to do my exercises, it's been really hard. I've been using ice and trying to relax a bit, sometimes I get shots of pain without doing a thing. I'm hoping it's temporary! I'll tell the therapist and take my pain pill! Guest guest
It certainly took me by surprise, Joan, I had gotten up from the kitchen chairs before that without too much problem. But like you said, it's to be expected. I have been taking my vicodin, I'm not going to try to tough it out. In fact, when it happened, I had finished my initial visit with the home PT, so I was pretty " juiced up " on the Vicodin. I had the worst night sleep last night...the pains just kept up in spite of the Vicodin. I do have a question...does anyone with TKR sleep with a pillow under their knees? Hospital said not to, in fact, they kept towels propped on the outside of my leg so it wouldn't roll out. Can't wait until I can sleep on my right side again! Thanks! Guest guest
Hi Lynn, You should not sleep with a pillow under your knee at this time because it is very important that you leg gets full extension. Sleeping with your knee bent at this time would inhibit the ability to straighten. So I was told. It makes sense, sort of. Do you have full extension? If you do, then it might not be terrible if you use a pillow. If not, don't. The best exercise for full extension is to stand on a book with your heels over the edge, strengthening your Achilles and straightening you knee. I was lucky and could do this from the get go.
