Hi, .

I am new to the group, as well... and although my son has

been " cholesteatoma " free for many years, I wanted to lend my

support.

Just to give you some background, my son was diagnosed at age 3 (he

turns 14 in November). You are lucky that the pediatrician caught

it, because from my understanding, it often goes undiagnosed by

pediatrician's. In my son's case, by the time the cholesteatoma was

found by the ENT, it was considered an " emergency " (the

cholesteatoma was large and had reached the facial nerve). Within a

week, he underwent a 6 1/2 surgery (radical mastoidectomy). He

recovered beautifully with no damage to the facial nerve. We were

very lucky. He had several recurrences and underwent two

reconstructive surgeries. He still has severe hearing loss in his

left ear, but manages just fine. We feel blessed that he is healthy

now and has had no recent recurrences.

I hope I didn't scare you, but as a parent, you need to become an

advocate for your child. Don't be afraid to ask questions. It also

doesn't hurt to seek another opinion.

Take care and please keep me posted.

God bless,

Terri

Jim, Thanks for the info. How is your weight loss coming along and

have you had a fill yet? Anyone out there from the northeast?

Hi , Weight loss is going OK, slow right now, but losing inches! I have had one fill so far, and the next is scheduled for next week. I feel great! Today at work (I am a hospital COO) I was rounding and had the gals in the surgery department ask if they could "feel my port." That is a new question for me:-) Good luck , and start practicing smiling again because you will be beaming in no time! -jimkarensvenson <karensvenson@...> wrote: Jim, Thanks for the info. Good luck with surgery. After my neice had hern surgery and was

resting in her hosp. room I talked to all the kids at home. My 7 yr

old son asked if she still had her ear. It was sort of funny. So I

explained that the surgery was inside and behind th eear that we see.

I hope he bounces back quickly and takes it all in stride. prayers

will be said for your family tomorrow.

My 6 yo son just had his second (and last!!) surgery. You will be

amazed at the resilience of little ones. Make sure to take plenty of

zip or button up shirts and something to do while you are waiting for

the surgery to end (it feels like an eternity), but in my experience,

my little boy was up and feeling great within 8 hours of surgery.

Good luck, and let us know how he makes out!

By the way, congrats on a fast diagnosis- 2 months from failed hearing

test to surgery is impressive!!

I certainly hope this will be the last surgery for your son, but please remember

that this is something that will need continuous monitoring and surgeries if

needed. That's tough to hear, but unfortunately kind of common. I've gone two

years now without needing one and I'm knocking on wood that I won't need any

more ... but I'll keep going to the otologist and hoping for the best.

Hi , I'm mom to two kiddos w/implants. My son wears one and my daughter

is bilateral and we parents are both hearing with their losses not connected to

each other. In other words they are deaf for different reasons. These guys in

this listserv are the experts. Most them wear the devices themselves and some

are parents here, others are investigating them trying to decide what is right

for them. If you don't know much about them, some of the technical or product

" talk " may confuse you so just ask them if you don't understand.

Hi ,

I've had my implant for over 10 years. So ask whatever you need to

ask. We are not shy here. Joke around a bit, but will get you an

answer.

When hearing aids are no longer doing the trick for a person, then the

next step to consider is a cochlear implant. It doesn't restore hearing

like normal hearing, but at the point you are a candidate, all you want

to do is HEAR. The electrodes replace the cilia in the cochlea, so you

have 16 - 22 electrodes replacing thousands of hair cells in the normal

cochlea. Huge achievement.

I talk on the phone, understand conversations without lipreading, and

do most things that hearing people do.

Because the cochlea is the same size at birth as it is in a full grown

adult, the surgery can be done on children as young as 6 months of age.

Although 12 months is the norm, if there is meningitis, it is important

to get the electrode array inserted before ossification makes it

difficult if not impossible. The drawback in implanting infants is how

long they can stay under anesthesia.

Ask awy, we have a wealth of knowledge here.

, There is nothing to fear from the lap band...Your taking control! I can promise you one thing your life will improve so much more with the band...Your health issues will get better, you'll feel good, you'll have more energy... I was banded 9/26/06 and my husband will be banded this month on the 16th...The band is a life saver! My weight was not as much as some but still I was considered obese...My family doctor told me one day that I was "severally obese"...My starting weight was 204, I'm now 138...I lost my weight within the 1st 7 months... So congratulations on taking a huge step...And If your like the rest of us we felt guilty that we were spending 8k to lose weight...We thought if we were strong enough we should be able to lose our weight on our own and not have to spend that kind of money but let me tell you I have never

Hi ,

Welcome to the board. I had lapband on 6/22/07 and down 54#s. I am also a diabetic and since surgery I have cut my medicines in half! This has been the best thing I could have done for myself. I feel so much better. Don't worry about having surgery in Mexico with Dr. A's team, they are the best! I would not even recommend any one having this done anywhere else! Good luck and ask lots of questions on this board. Lots of good information from real people that have already gone thru the surgery.

Thankyou vanessa, I do have some questions. Has anyone had trouble finding a local Dr to do the fills? And what are the reprecussions of over indulging one the banding is done? Have you found that there are any paticular foods that hurt or bother you now? Hi Rena, Thankyou for your reply. I admit I am pretty nervous about the surgery.. I had a very bad experience several years ago in a local hospital so that contributes to my being wary of any hospital proceedures especially surgery. I dont think i will feel a bit guilty over the price as i am sure i have spent that much over the years trying other weight loss programs that never work. I look forward to living a life not controlled by pain every day. I am so tired of hurting so bad all the time. I can enjoy my grandchildren, cant ride my horse anymore, or any of the other activities that I love. I want to walk thru walmart not ride in a motorized buggy! It is definatly time for me to take control of my life. rena brown <rena71857@...> wrote: , There is nothing to fear from the lap band...Your taking control! Hi Congratulations on making such an important decision while you are still so young. I wish this had been available when I was in my 40's and quite a bit smaller. Now I am 60 and have a long, long way to go. I too have diabetes...along with high blood pressure and high chlorestol. and I had surgery in June....mine was the 21st and hers was the 22nd. Like I have cut my diabetic medication in half and stopped one of them completely. I was having a lot of trouble with dizzyness and cut my blood pressure medication in half and it went away. Will soon be having bloodwork to check the chlorestol but I am sure it too has gotten a lot better. I too have no regrets about having the surgery. I haven't lost as much as I would have liked by now but we are all different. I chose the band because I didn't want to lose

too quickly like those with the gastric bypass. I have always chewed my food to a liquid consistency and with the band I guess that can be a blessing and a curse. I have had NO problem with any food that I have eaten and, I have had NO PBing. Actually I did once but that was because I had the stomach flu. I have had 2 fills and have gone to Dr. A both times. I live in Southern California so that isn't a problem for me. I think that I am going to go down for another fill soon. Best of luck to you. If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask them. Hi jane, It sounds so funny hearing someone say "while you are still so young" lol. Most of the time i feel so darn old! Ok. so you waitied a little longer in life to lose weight and get health, well then you will just be a sexy senior! lol. I am glad to hear that your banding has been without complecations. I really will have to train myself to slow down when i eat. I eat way to fast and dont chew properly. I get choked way too often especially on anything with grain or cornmeal. So how long do you stay on the liquids and then the mushy foods? Dont fret over the loss not being fast enough. Gosh look how many years we have stayed over weight.! hi sandra! you will be so pleased you decided to have the surgery. i think as you get closer to your surgery date you will be less nervous and more excited! you will find that all the people on this board are very helpful and informative. if you have a chance you should check out tracyslapband.com - she had the surgery by Dr. A and to this date i still go out out her website - it is very informative. caprisesandra carroll <sassysandic@...> wrote: Hello, I

I am pretty nervous about it, so hoping that speaking with some of you that have already been through it will eleviate some of my fears. Thankyou

Hello , I am a little behind on my reading and posting so I hope that you have had good response from the 'pros' on this board. I am definately NOT a pro but I had the band surgery June 21, 2007 @ 59 1/2. I also have diabetes and arthritis. My diabetes has been much better since one of the factors is what you eat and the other is how much you eat. My sugars were in the 150 - 200 range. Now it is 150 and below with losts of tests in the 70 and 80 range. I have had the amount of medicine I take cut in half. My blood pressure has greatly improved. When I was checked yesterday it was

107/58. I wanted to mention that the one thing that almost talked me out of the band was the idea of the needle at fill time. I have had 2 fills so far and I am here to tell you that if scaredy cat me can take it....ANYONE can! My 1st fill was August 20th and was 2.5cc., 2nd was October 5th and was 2.5cc. So, I have 5 cc in the large band. I have had absolutely NO problem with eating whatever I want including eggs, bread etc., taking medication, or drinking ice cold water. I do eat a much smaller quanity of food than before. Chewing is a problem for many but not for me. I have always chewed my food to a liquid consistency before swalling and that might be my problem. As for my weight loss... I had lost about 50 lbs and 14" before the holidays and am now working to lose the rest of my 'holiday gain'. I am working hard to break through one of the 'underlands...I won't tell which one but it isn't onederland! Maybe someday I will tell where I started but for now this is it. My last comment is the hair loss. I already had a problem with hair loss due to the many medications I take. Now it is much worse. I actually got a hair cut this week. I had just been brushing it and clipping it up in sort of a bun because I was losing so much I was afraid that if I cut off the length(down to my bra) there wouldn't be anything to cover up where I am really loosing it. Well, my hair is now about 10 inches

shorter. Apparently I have lots of new hair growing in...thank goodness...so by cutting it shorter and shaping it, I have pretty good coverage of the balding area. Best wishes to you. Keep asking questions and let us know when you have your surgery. When I feel inhigher spirits the blue one brightens to where people think I havecontacts in to make me look evil

or I am trying to look unique orsomething. I have tried to get contacts to hide and make both eyes thesame but then the pupils don't dilate so then it's clear they arecontacts. sigh.

I had a similar experience and gained about 20 lbs. I have lost 15 of it but it

took a lot of work. I think that the Lex slows the metabolism as it cuts down

the anxiety. Previously, I couls eat all I wanted and never gained a pound. I

cut my meal portions in half and cut out all snacking between meals. I also cut

out all sugar and most breads except for whole wheat. Since one shouldn't drink

alcohol with Lex that wasn't an issue.

Good luck!

Hi all!

So glad I found this group. My name is , I 34 years and I've

been on lexapro for 10 months. I suffer from mayor depression and

anxiety and the pill has done wonders for me. Even though it has

affectd my sex drive, (lower) I just don't think I could ever stop

taking this pill. I tried to wean myself off of it, but the results

where not nice.. I fell into a deep depression, I had anxiety attacs at

night, my fear increased, I was very, very irritable and I could not

sleep. So I'm on it again. I feel good now but my biggest concern is

this: I have gained at leas 15 pounds since I started my treatment. I

exercise 4 times a week and now I am really being careful with my

eating habits.. I'm not losing any weith, it seems like I keep gaining

and I retain so much water as well. Does any body experience anything

like this?

Thanks and Love to all.
