Guest guest
I'm on it just for depression. It has not caused me to gain. In fact, because I feel better I go to the gym and am generally more active so I've lost about 15 lbs. I also have a slow metabolism because of thyroid problems so I know that the drug itself doesn't seem to be affecting me in that area. Even though it has affectd my sex drive, (lower) I just don't think I could ever stop taking this pill. I tried to wean myself off of it, but the results where not nice.. I fell into a deep depression, I had anxiety attacs at night, my fear increased, I was very, very irritable and I could not sleep. So I'm on it again. Guest guest
I did the same thing on Celexa, the parent drug of Lexapro. It's known to happen to some people though with the Lex it seems less common than with the Celexa. The only solution is to switch drugs. Barbara new member Hi all! So glad I found this group. Guest guest
  Personally I don't believe lexapro causes people to gain weight as such.  Most of the population are overweight  - if you are taking a new medication its easy to blame that for weight problems but I imagine the amount you eat is the main factor !!  I lost 20 lbs in a month with my anxiety - have put most of it back on now but I know its beacause I am eating more since my appetite returned. As eating becomes enjoyable again it's more tempting to eat when you feel depressed or anxious.  Giving up lex because of weight problems when it is working for you may not be a good idea as the weight gain may be a result of you not feeling so depressed.  Mike From: Barbara <bjarrett@...> Subject: Re: new member Lexapro Date: Monday, 7 July, 2008, 2:40 AM I did the same thing on Celexa, the parent drug of Lexapro. Guest guest
I've been on it about 4-1/2 to 5 years. I get tired but it's based on my own issues, not the Lexapro, from my own experience on it. The weight gain? I'm always battling it. If I go on a diet and stay on it, I still lose weight...and exercise. I can't blame that on the Lex. lol. My husband was a raging, abusive alcoholic & I started on the Lex because my life was a living hell. He passed away in Feb. 2005 and I can't imagine what I'd be like NOT on it. I was without it for 3 days a couple years ago and it was NASTY. I am comfy on it so I don't see any need to stop now...life is very stressful and it helps. I also take Librium in the AM sometimes to take the " edge " off. Does anybody else take any tranquilizers? new member Hi all! So glad I found this group. Guest guest
I was on Lexapro for about 3 years. The fatigue never left I had no problem with Lex, except for the Tiredness and sweating. Guest guest
It's very interesting how all of us have so many different effects - be it due to the drug, depression, or how we feel after taking the drug. I don't feel tired at all! There's definetelly a change in the way I burn energy, my metabolism is slower for sure. My only solution, and I believe there's no way around it: move more, eat less. I'm now keeping track of calories and exercising regularly. Guest guest
I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your husband. Yes, fatigue rather than depression is definitely the lesser of two evils. I like the cymbalta for the bit more energy, however, I do " feel " things More now. I am going through a LOT of major stress right now and it Hurts. I'd go back on the lex for that. I don't know what to do, I think I Might just keep on trying different meds to see if I can get the right one. Guest guest
Believe what you want...the stats say differently. It changes the metabolism for some people. The information is out there about SSRI's and weight gain. Just because for you the problem didn't occur doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Be happy you're one of the ones that hasn't had these issues. Guest guest
I had to be put on Ambien while on Effexor (and Lexapro). Didn't help though; I still couldn't sleep! Depression and slowed metabolism? I think it also has different affects on people; I know some who drop weight and look anorexic and others who stay the same and others who gain weight. Some eat when depressed, some don't....not sure if there is a chemical relationship to an actual slowed metabolism by having depression. Guest guest
Hi , Yes, I gained a lot of weight in a short amount of time while taking lexapro. I don't think all the weight was strictly due to a lowered metabolism probably brought on by the drug. In retrospect, I was on it during the winter months and where I live, the winters are harsh enough to keep people inside. I guess what I'm saying is, although I truly and honestly believe, and know, that lexapro caused my metabolism to slow and for me to gain weight, particularly in my abdomen, I think I would have gained less weight at the time had I done the following (which I'm doing now and it helped me to lose th 15 lbs I gained - although I no longer take lexapro): 1. Write down every morsel of food and drink you consume and tally your calories. Be diligent. I think many of us consume more than we think we do (esp. while on lexapro since it can trigger cravings, appetite, and even hunger). 2. Add weight training to your execise regimen to build invaluable muscle mass which will increase your metabolism. Good luck! That's great that you have found some wonderful relief from lexapro! “I am not interested to know whether vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or doesn’t….the pain which it inflicts upon unconsenting animals is the basis of my enmity toward it, and it is to me sufficient justification of the enmity without looking further.” – Mark Twain From: <ctinocoreal@...> Subject: new member Lexapro Date: Saturday, July 5, 2008, 3:16 PM Hi all! Guest guest
Hi and welcome to the group. Irritable...hmmm. Might be a sign of the increase in anxiety some people experience when they first start an SSRI or increase the dose. If it doesn't ease off in the next week or so speak to your doc. As for night or morning...you can try switching the time and see if it helps. Barbara New member Hello everyone, I have a question, I've been on Lexapro for a little over a week and the side affects are starting to go away but I am now starting to get a bit more irritable, is this normal? I am it taking at night before bed now I'm thinking about taking it in the morning when I get up, would this help? I hope everyone has a great Labor Day Weekend. ------------------------------------
Guest guest
, I also have started to feel irritable and very edgy but I think that may be the Wellbutrin I take in combination. I started on Xanax when I began to feel irritable in the first week of starting Lexapro and it worked well. They say Lexapro reaches it's peak at 5 hours so I would ask your Dr. about taking it in the morning. With the Xanax I have found that I am now down to one a day just before bed and it takes away the edge. > > Hello everyone, I have a question, I've been on Lexapro for a little > over a week and the side affects are starting to go away but I am now > starting to get a bit more irritable, is this normal? Guest guest
It is the fear we all live with, that those yucky complications will become a reality for our families. You are in our thoughts, and we are hoping you will have a full recovery. I would also caution everyone to watch those infections...Chloe's ctoma grew rapidly during severe infection when the ctoma itself was infected. It filled her entire mastoid cavity in just a month or so. That's not supposed to be normal, but obviously it can happen. Warmly, On Thu, Sep 4, 2008 at 8:17 PM, Rusnak <jrflyfish@...> wrote: Hi! Surgery on August 18 showed the cholesteatoma back with a vengence. The bony covering over the facialnerve was gone. Two cells remain stuck to the facial nerve. Mymastoid is intact. Facial nerve monitoring was used during mysurgery. I was left with a huge case of TMJ. My face swelled days later. One week ago today, I had to have half of the packing remove -I could no longer tolerate the pain and numbness in my face.Yesterday was a good day - not dizzy at all. Today, another story, dizzy! I have another visit Wednesday with my surgeon. I m worried I won't be able to return to work full time and that my face will beparalized. I do not want this in my brain. I've been prepared forthis since I was 15 years old when I was first diagnosed with apotential for cholesteatoma. The wait is over, and fear has really set in.------------------------------------
Guest guest
Yes - I agree! When you have any infection in any part of the body it can have a negative effect on an implant. When I took n to Urgent Care last January the doctor (who had been an ER doc.) said that anytime you have an infection it can tend to go to an implant in the body and cautioned us in the future when he gets sick. n's ear was so swollen and painful we couldn't even touch his head, he couldn't hear for a week and it all happened in a matter of 2 days - a bit scary! Interesting - as it seems to have happened to others also. Peace, Judy s wrote: > It is the fear we all live with, that those yucky complications will > become a reality for our families. Guest guest
Hi , Welcome and hope you are feeling better today. My surgery was on July 14th and I also ended up with a TMJ injury which is usually caused by the anesthesia intubation process. Unfortunately my jaw remained dislocated for 10 days and I could hardly open my mouth. I know your pain is terrible and makes the recoup so much more difficult. I have had two dental appliances made since my operation. The first one on the upper teeth didn't help much but the second one which covers the bottom teeth has made a world of difference in the pain. Find a good TMJ specialist to make one if you can as it really does help if fitted properly. Also a soft diet helps and gives the jaw time to heal. Ice packs help reduce the inflamation ....just 5 min. at a time. The fears of what the future holds is one of the hardest parts of cholesteatoma to deal with. When I find myself worrying I try to remember that in reality none of us knows what tomorrow will bring and giving up the pleasures of today is not what I am willing to do. I used Peggy Huddleston's Prepare for Surgery, Heal Faster book and tape before surgery and it helped me tremendously with my fears. Many of her techniques can be used after surgery also, even for much smaller procedures. It basically gives you mind/body techniques to use during stressful times. It also teaches to set healing goals and I've been able to meet my first two goals despite the TMJ. New York University hospital gives a course using her techniques for people having surgery there as do some other large medical centers so it does have medical credence. You can find more info at her site: www.healfaster.comHope some of my hints are able to help you!Be well,\>> Hi! I've just had me second cholesteatoma removed. My first surgery > was April 21, 2003.
