Bath Fizzers

2 parts baking soda

1 part citric acid

1 part corn starch, sea salt, or epsom salts

1/4 part Borax

Fo

oil

I sift the dry ingredients together than I mix the wet stuff in. I PACK

mine into a clear two part Christmas ball ornament . I let them dry

overnight, then in the AM I put them in the oven at the very lowest temp for

a few hours. They turn out rock hard.

Everyone liked them but a few of my friends said they were a little oily so

my next batch I am going to cut back on the oil and mix a little witch

hazel. I like this recipe because I can make a very small amount at first

to see if I like the changes.

I am also going to try some powdered goats milk and honey to go with some

Goats milk and Honey Cp I made and love!

I am allergic to Borax so could you please tell me its purpose in the

recipe below and tell me of other alternatives I could use in its

place? Thanks. I have yet to try doing these despite having all the

ingredients but know I want to do this soon.

Hi there,

I too am allergic to borax and do not use it in bath fizzers, basically you

can just omit it..... use the same dry ingredients and either bond them

together with oil or spray with witch hazel (or both) no need for the borax

at all...

basic recipe is

1cup baking soda

1/2 cup citric acid

1/2 cup cornstarch

colour, fragrance and spritz with witch hazel until consistency of slightly

moist sand... until the mix stays together when you form a ball in your hand

Hi . Thanks! I couldn't sleep so I was reading your answer and

decided to try it. I had an " interesting " time, not sure it'll turn out

but we learn by doing after all.

I mixed your recipe below and added a touch of food color to the spritz

bottle of witch hazel and 1 teasp. FO and 1 teasp. jojoba. Jojoba was

possibly a wrong choice but what the hey.

I was laughing. I kept smashing these things down into my candy molds

and they kept expanding, I thought it was my imagination until I looked

over at tray one and saw they had all risen like pizzas! LOL. Is this

normal?

Now, outside of fun what are these good for? I note that witch hazel is

an astringent but don't see where that little will do much in a tub of

water. Citric acid has a touch of a " bite " to it (I have eczema) and

baking soda perhaps deodorizes a bit. Anyone have comments?

I will work on learning about these things and how to make them this

week. Thanks so much.

Oh I live by baking soda. I have 4 kids and one has severe eczema, sometimes

she can not use soap. The baking soda seems to be very soothing. After her

soak I rub her down with a very gentle lotion. It is also good or insect

bites. My mid wife recommended it for yeast infections and diaper rash

those and athletes foot are the same fungus). As soon as the baby gets a

little red in the tub they go for a baking soda soak. It will usually be

gone by the time they wake from there nap. My DH teases me as I am

convinced baking soda is a cure -all :-) Let me know if you try it and what

you think.

I have never tried the witch hazel in the bath fizzies.

WAY TOOOO much liquid, you really only need say 10 to 15 spritzes if that,

as soon as the mixture stays together it is enough....this is a case where

more is not better (grin)..... actually in this weather i made some using

liquid colourant and that seemed to be enough to hold it together, didn't

even need the witch hazel. I have tried using oils in fizzies and they seem

too slippery in the tub (especially for kids) and the oil seems to take away

some of the fizzing action..... the baking soda is soothing and softening to

the skin, the citric acid as far as i know only contributes to the fizz... i

also have eczema and the citric acid bothers my hands when i am making the

fizzes but not in the bath... i guess it is the conentrated amount that

irritates. When i do want to use oil for moisturizing, i generally imbed a

small chunk of shea or cocoa butter in the middle of the bomb so it doesn't

distract from the fizzing action.

Best way to colour and scent is to add the colour (i usually use herbs or

dry colourants) and scent first, then spritz with WH. Witch hazel is

astringent and doesn't set off the fizz like water will. You should not have

any or very minor fizzing action when you are making them, if you do you

have too much liquid, pack them in the molds really tight and tap them out

on the counter right away.... if the mold is quite detailed leave them to

set for 15 minutes or so.

since i dont make these very often, i get mine from the grocery stores

you can use the citric acid in the canning isle (to keep fruit from turning

brown)

but i have started to use sour salt, in the kosher isle, works better

its just like taking a soak in bath salts, but like it says, added fun, and

if you use scents, the scents explode around you while fizzing

Hi . I used to use corn starch to cure diaper rash. I'd apply it

after rinsing the area and patting dry. I think the main key here is

washing off the pee.

Most lotions made me worse (eczema), esp. anything with lanolin. A lot

of trial and error. I like Trader Joe's or my own now.

Insect bite makes sense that baking soda would help, that seems right.

One note, my FO (Rose Petals) which I usually love I did not like at all

in these. Could be the combo smell or I used too much.

These things dry HARD!!! I will bathe in them later and see what I

think then.

kinds. a friend of mines has a daughter who a type of skin infection and

they could not get rid of it and it itched real bad. she used the soap

during a bath and it stopped the itching so with her medication it

finaly started to heal. they ran out of it one time did not use one

night, during the evening she started to itch so bad she was making it

worse. they came right over and got some more and did not stop until it

was cleared. there is another man here at the lake who owns a business

and he wont use anything but hubbys soap.

Hi Mrs. Meade,

I also have HepC. I have been very fortunate so far, and have not had to be

on any meds. I did hear the other day though, that the United Way supports an

agency that will help pay for medications that you can't afford, or that your

insurance refuses to pay. I am currently checking into it for pain medication

that I need for two ruptured discs in my lower back. My insurance refuses to

pay anything on it, so I have approached the United Way for help.

I wish you lots of luck in finding help woth this!! Let me know how it turns

out.....

Hi I am not a person who really writes alot of emails on this list, and I

really don't know why, This is a GREAT bunch of caring, loving people and I

love to hear their ideas but I never think I have anything to offer. (I'm

probably wrong but that an issue I'm working on) Anyway...my name is

and I was diagnosed in Nov of 97. I also had a liver biopsy that showed some

scarring and also some cirrhosis. I was told that I was a perfect candidate

just like you. Can I ask how your levels were?

Are you having alot of the symptoms of the hep? I know when I first was

diagnosed with my hep I read everything I could get my hands on and it seemed

that every symptom they named, I would get. My liver dr gave me the videos

and booklets about the injections and I told my boss about the side effects I

might be experiencing etc. and then I was told that because I had a history

of depression I could not be put on the meds. I was very upset, thought I

was going to die the next day and that just tore me up. I am a recovering

alcoholic and I started to drink again thinking what's the difference because

I'm going to die anyway. As far as I know my insurance would have covered

all but I never even got that far.

The point Im trying to make I guess is that I have not had the injections,

I've stopped drinking, and I listen to this group regarding some of the

natural remedies. I still have my levels checked (not as regularly as I

should, it's been 1 1/2 years and I'm going in Sept) and I honestly feel

pretty good. I realized through this list (and a gentleman I work with) that

you can live without the meds. I feel pretty good at this point and I

continue to do what I can to work on my disease and sometimes it's not easy.

I have no ideas regarding supplemental income for the meds but I'm sure

someone in this group will have some, they always do (as I said they are

great!). Just because you can't get on the medication right now, there are

alot of things you yourself can do to help the hep. The medicine isn't 100%

all the time and alot of your recovery (in my opinion) is a positive

attitidude. I know I have come a long way with this and I have a long way to

go but just remember that what you are feeling right now is normal and part

of the process and it will get better. There is help out there I know there

is and I am going to talk to some people to see if I can get and answer for

you about your insurance. (I work for an insurance company). What state are

you in and what type of insurance do you have? I've rambled long enough but

I hope I've made some sense. I really am trying to help I know how you feel.

It's hard to feel hopeless and helpless but you don't have to. Hope I've

made some sense. take care okay?

:)

What a wonderful letter you wrote!!!! Your story is truly amazing!!

And you said all the things I would have said.... and very well.

Keep up the positive attitude....it really does help.

I made a decision not to go with the combo therapy also. I have other

significant chronic disease besides the hepC which was contracted during

a quintuple bypass in 1985 when I was 42. Because it seemed unwise to

even try a therapy which listed anemia as a very major side effect, and

because the hep doc wanted a cardiac stress test before the biopsy, I

finally just said NO.

For each of us the decision must be based on our own circumstances. It

is my understanding that viral load is not necessarily a predictor of

success of the combo therapy. It would seem from what I hear that the

success rate is not quite what the hand-out literature claims. I might

have felt differently about trying it if I was younger and if my husband

did not have Alzheimer's.

So, it really is an individual decision. This is a very caring loving

group and I, for one, am here any time someone needs an ear....

Haven't posted much recently, but hope everyone is doing as well as

could be hoped for!!!

Hi i want to thank everyone for the help and support, it means alot to

me. There are times when I feel like I am going through this alone. I

am married but my husband is very distant now. So the support from

everyone here helps me cope. , as far as my levels go, I was

checked a month ago and they were at 855,000. I am still quite new to

all the terminology and meanings of all this. I have read all emails

from the group repeatedly, learning. Thank you all once again.

Mrs. Meade,

Glad you are feeling better - as far as your levels go, I was thinking about

what I wrote last night and I remembered that your levels can go up and down

alot. You can be tested one time and then an hour later they can be

different. Just keep your chin up and keep a level head (that's one area I

went wrong, but I'm getting better!).

I'm sorry that your husband isn't as supportive as he probably should be, my

husband is the same way. He is a " pick yourself up by the bootstraps " kind

of guy who thinks that alcoholism and depression are a state of mind so I

know how that can feel. But I know he does love me and believe it or not he

is coming around - slow but sure.

Have faith,
