I knew I was going to have the same problem, so I ordered some liquid

calcium, it's contains 1000 calcium and 400 vitamin D. I liked it, it

has a citrus taste, and I can take two tablespoons in the morning. The

brand is Wellesse that I got, I'm sure there are others. I forget

where i got it, it was $20 for 4 bottles, each bottle is 16 days. This

But, when I googled liquid calcium, there are a lot of brands out

there, and you can probably check with your drugstore as well.

Such great recovery for your partner!  My daughter had a stroke the end of

February and she too is doing great.  Mindset is a huge part of the recovery and

it sounds as though your partner is focussed on getting back to 100%.  )  Hang

Carol , I an taking a liquid calcium citrate from the health food

store , I also am taking strontium it is a bone builder , it is a

large pill but dissolves fast so doesn't cause my tight band a

problem. I have just been told I have osteopenia and my doc wanted

me on bone medicine...did my research and said h#ll no!!!!

ONE thing that was very disturbing to find out is that tums ,

acyphex,protonix etc... all the stuff our docs put us on for reflux

makes it so we do not absorb calcium or it leaches it from our system

I am a bit ticked , give a pill , delete nutrients so they can give

me another pill with devastating side effects........

Anyway...head to your local health food store , I am sure they can

help, also go to some boards for osteoporosis and see what they are

talking about

Donna - good to hear from you! It's pretty well known that all the

acid reducers interfere with nutient absorption, and the docs should

know this - and if not, WE must.

The calcium citrate is what we need, not the carbonate - but do

please be sure it's USP approved, which will have a label on the

bottle.

I totally understand your concerns about Mexico. I live in San Diego and have a Sentry card which means I can go to Mexico anytime without waiting in the lines - in other words, it is a fast lane access from San Diego to Mexico.

In saying that, even with my Sentry card, I don't go to Tijuana because it is so dirty and rife with a criminal element right now. So, with me living here and having numerous friends who still live there and cross the border daily....even if they accompany me, I don't like to go there. So, I totally understand your fear.

However, Mexicali is a totally different city, two hours away from Tijuana and San Diego, It is a smaller town mentality and akin to the 'old west' feeling. The hospital in Mexicali is a newer hospital that was built for the wealthier Mexicans and American cliental. It is so beautiful and clean, clean, clean! I have had surgery in both the US and Mexico and now can truly say that I would go there again in a heartbeat with Dr. Aceves.

My sister felt the same way about me going to Mexico to have surgery. She was really worried about me being there and her not having any power to help me if I needed it. The Mexicali hospital is actually only a few blocks from the border and quite close to the US. However, once my sister got there and she stayed with me, she was really pleased with the service and professionalism of the staff and doctors. You see the doctors much more than you would see the doctor's in the US. Even after my surgery, she commented that if she needed any pastic surgery, she would go to Mexico to have it done she was so impressed.

I researched the surgery for several months prior to making a decision (I am a professor at a local college in San Diego) in order to find the best doctor. It also seems that there are an inordinate number of US nurses and medical staff who use Dr. Aceves and go to Mexicali for his services. I find that if the US medical community is using him, they are more informed about the standards (OSHA) with respect to cleanliness and nursing techniques than I am and if they feel comfortable.....I really can feel comfortable too.

Another aspect of this messageboard site is that when I was getting ready for surgery, I would read every message of those who had gone before me. Everyone was saying the same thing....."The hospital was beautiful! The doctors and staff were exceptional! The hotel was awesome! I felt fine and had no problems with the surgery....etc." Once I went and had the same experience as the others....I can only say that everything everyone has ever said about the hospital, Dr. Aceves, and staff is absolutely accurate...down to the last detail. I feel I had a better experience in Mexicali than I would have had in the US.

You and your friend have nothing to worry about! Dr A and his team and the hospital is the best. I work in the healthcare industry and was VERY impressed about the care they give. He will answer any questions you have before surgery and they entire team will go out of their way to meet all of your needs. Your friend will be in the best of hands. I was banded 5/24/07 and i have not regretted a moment. Well not completely true. The moments I have regretted have been the 3 months after surgery that i had to deal with a broken foot and then 7 months i had to deal with the healing of a triple break of my leg. With all of that (and no exercise) i am down 87# i still have a lot to go, and just my last fill in June, i feel like i am all most at my sweet spot. Probably could use a little more but

still loosing so won't mess with what is working. I love my band, i know that others are starting to get on the sleeve wagon, which is looking like a better solution (no after care - but that hasn't been a problem for me ) but as far as the medical team of DR A- He is awesome and so is his staff.

You may want to try giving her rice or oatmeal that's very runny (made with

the formula) -- almost soup like. I have one friend that worked for. Good

I was going to do that but when I went to the weston -price website

they said children that age have difficulty digesting the cereal to

wait till they are older. They do better with animal foods.

According to the average weight loss for women, you are doing

GREAT! Men lose a average of 1 pound a day and women lose a average of ½ pound

a day. I did the shots through my menses and they were a little heaver then

usual, and I didn’t have as good of a weight loss, but I didn’t notice

any other difference. –Sounds like you are doing GREAT!

I just returned from Dr. Aceves and was sleeved on 10/21/08. I have never been treated so well, and the caring by ALL staff is out of this world. Bipley is right, the US could take some lessons from these doctors and nurses and entire staff. One day when I was there they had already cleaned my room from top to bottom 2 times by 3:30 PM. They always know your name, they are there when you need them, they will answer any and all your questions. I was sent home with such a detailed medical report to give to my own doctor here in the US. If I were you just keep reading this board and watching the things people have to say. You will never have any regrets if your have them do your WLS.

Mexicali was actually THAT good! And the facility where Dr. Aceves performs is the best I have EVER been to (I'm born and raised in Los Angeles). I had the sleeve on 10/1/08 and it was the best decision I ever made. Infections and things like that can happen anywhere, just make sure you do your part.

Dr. Aceves in AMAZING! My husband and I were banded by him and his

staff on 10/16 and we have absolutely no regrets!

We researched this for months and didn't take the matter lightly. I

would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

The hospital and facilities were cleaner than any hospital I've been

to in the states. The staff is warm and friendly and as far as

Mexicali is concerned, it's much cleaner than several oceanside

cities in Mexico that we have visited.

I had the lap-band surgery in September. I was apprehensive just like

so many others. I have never been treated so well in US hospitals. The

staff are so helpful and the doctors visit you several times a day. The

Almater Hospital is a small, private hospital (only 35 beds). It is

spotlessly clean - the staff even scrub down the walls preparing rooms

for the next patient checking in. Mexicali is NOT like Tijuana at all.

I went by myself and was never alone in the city. Ernesto picked me up

at the San Diego airport (along with a few others), drove to Mexicali

where we were immediately brought to the hospital for our pre-op tests

then drove us to our hotel. The hotel has several restaurants right

there where we ate dinner. Dr. Campos met with us that night to explain

the surgery in detail and give us an opportunity to ask questions.

Ernesto picked us up at the hotel the next morning and brought us all

to the hospital for our surgeries. On the day of check-out, once again

Ernesto loads your luggage into the van and takes you back to the

airport. I recommend Dr. Aceves and the staff at Almater to anyone. He

is one of the most experienced doctors in the field of bariatric

surgery. Some postings from earlier this month were from a man and

woman who are in the medical field. The woman had the surgery and the

man (who is a surgical nurse in the US) asked if he could be in the

operating room to observe. He said he was very impressed with what he

saw.

You really couldn't be in better hands. As a matter of fact, one friend

had gone down already a week ago and I am accompanying a co-worker at

the end of November for her surgery. I hope this eases your worries a

little.

I was banded by Dr Aceves on Oct 20 and i have nothing but good

things to say about the whole experience. Being a nurse and having

been in many American hospitals-I hate to say that the hospital in

Mexicali put ours to shame. Everyone was so nice. The hospital was

cleaner than any I've ever seen. I would highly recommend the doctor

and hospital . I was well taken care of.

I go for my band on 11/7, I had the same questions that you have. What really helped me is that in September I went and seen for myself, (I live in Arizona 3 hours away). I took a friend that has family from the area, my hubby and mother. We was all amazed of the hospital, it put our hospital to shame here. I also was able to be there when a group was coming in for there fills, to be able to see someone ask questions and to hear their stories was the best. I think that it helped my husband as well about the surgery. So if you get a chance and are close enough check it out for yourself.

I was banded in March and wanted to put my 2 cents in, since it seemed that all that responded were recently banded/sleeved and since i've been banded and filled a few times, it won't just sound like the "honeymoon" opinion. (not that it does, I just remember when I was researching)

Dr. Aceves is awesome!

First before I even went, there were several times that I was emailing Nina every day with questions or concerns.

I am a military wife but could not get approval from insurance and saw this as way to prevent all the health issues that i see my family going through as they age. We got financing to cover the expense, the payments are less than our car payment.

Hubby had more issues with it being in Mexico than I did. Before we married I went to a dentist in Mexicali and didn't have any problems. I'm originally from the midwest and have heard it all-most of it urban legend I know now.

Due to regulations restricting military traveling to Mexico, I went alone, however, I never felt alone. As someone else pointed out, Ernesto picked me up (I live in AZ and parked my car in Calexico) and took me to the hospital where I met others there for the band and a couple getting fills. It was interesting speaking with them, hearing how grateful they were to Dr. Aceves and the change in thier lives thanks to the band.

At the motel, a couple of us girls got together. The motel is nice too, not a cheap motel. The guys were even offering to run and get sushi for me and bring it back, as I had forgotten to have my "last meal" before I came.

Dr. Campos then came to the motel and gathered all of us who were there to be banded. He explained the procedure, showed us the bands, answered many questions that we had.

I have had cosmetic surgery, plus 3 c-sections, and a couple other procedures in the states but there i felt rushed in and out- like hurry up, we have someone else for this bed. But at Alamater, I was treated so well, the rooms were clean, quiet; the staff was very kind, great bedside manner. Dr. Aceves was the sweetest, kindest doctor I think I have ever met. Really concerned for your welfare, not making money.

I have had 3 fills. No problems. I have seen videos of fills online, and it looks like the doctor in those videos finds the port through trial and error, but Dr. Campos uses an xray and checks to make sure you are not too full before you leave.

I am very happy with my choice to go to Dr. Aceves.

Thanks for that, unfortunately I'm all the way in Pennsylvania so is costly for me to go and check it out. I have looked at pictures on the Internet and they seem clean enough but you never know until you experience for yourself. I had not previously heard about the horror stories of Mexico until i mentioned it to my mom (who wants to also have surgery).

What was the area like where the hospital is located? My husband feels happy about the location etc but i got myself scared after my mom talked about Mexico.

Will you keep me posted about your experience, i would be interested to find out how you got on

I go for my band on 11/7, I had the same questions that you have. What really helped me is that in September I went and seen for myself, (I live in Arizona 3 hours away). I took a friend that has family from the area, my hubby and mother. We was all amazed of the hospital, it put our hospital to shame here. I also was able to be there when a group was coming in for there fills, to be able to see someone ask questions and to hear their stories was the best. I think that it helped my husband as well about the surgery. So if you get a chance and are close enough check it out for yourself.

I have been trying for some time now to find a surgeon for WLS, costs within the US are so expensive that i think the only step is to go to Mexico. I have spoken to several surgical companies and think i feel confident in what i have heard about Dr Aceves, however to give myself piece of mind i wanted to speak to people who had experienced this surgery both by Dr Aceves and going to Mexico.

Is Mexcio really that bad? what are the facilities really like? How do i know that the surgery wont go bad or me get an infection from the hosptal? Did anyone else have the same concerns?

Please help andput my fears to bed
