Guest guest
Dear Mike Nice 3 cases!!! Great! This are very difficult cases, Lupus and/or arithitis and/or fibromyalgia. This are really heavy issues. So big congratulations to you! Thanks a lot. -- Re: Pain ,I had 3 clients with chronic pain issues (2 with chronic back pain and 1 with an unclear Dx of Lupus and/or arithitis and/or fibromyalgia. With the back pain clients I (monopolar)inhibited 3-6 hz and rewarded 12-15 hz at Cz (mostly)or C4. Both responded very well and continue to do so. One of them has had occaional pain with strenuous activety, but seems to recover much quicker than she was able prior to NFB. I must add that both were on pain meds and getting physical therapy for awhile but not getting better until they started NFB.The third client was seen for migraines that nearly incapacitated her several times per week. When I first saw her she told me about having severe joint pain as well which further decrease her functionality. She was on an assortment of meds, including steroids. As indicated, her Dx was unclear. I started her with the same protocol as the others for chronic pain (but always at C4) this seemed to decrease her migraines and the joint pain somewhat. Then I added T3/T4 per Pete's suggestion for tone issues. This became the primary protocol and was done for 15 minutes per session. I finished up with the C4 protocol for 5 minutes, since this made her feel so good and stabilized her since she became a bit emotionally dysregulated while we searched for a calming frequency (which became 10-13 hz)at T3/T4. Since completing the training this past summer, she has been doing fine. No more migraines as far as I know; some joint stiffness but able to function better. She is still getting some meds, including prednesone, though as I understand it, at a lower dose.Hope this helps.Mike Ferrara, MA, LLP > Dear List Members> > A week ago, I sent a mail asking for possible protocols for Chronic Pain.> > I must say that I am amazed, that I have received not even one mail, about> this.> > On the other hand, I see a fast mailing on multimedia issues, New Software > Dings or Beeps! and DVD, or USB stuff! > One monitor, how to connect 2 monitors! I told my OS that the lower rim of my kneecap is always tender & he said that could be the CP. I've also gotten pains down my outer calf and up into my hip & lower back (from the IT band contracting in sympathy to the pain from my CP and torn meniscus). >I guess I would describe my problem more as a achiness/throbbing than >pain. Guest guest
Mike & Kate: It sounds like your problems may be unrelated to your kneecaps, which could be a good thing. There are all kinds of ligaments, tendons, muscles and fascia surrounding your legs. Anything in there could be causing your pain. Many times, it is a ligament or tendon problem. Try to get to know your anatomy as best as you can. The Internet makes it easy. If you can put your finger on your pain (literally) and figure out exactly what it is, you'll have a better shot at getting better. Mike, your calf spasms are a tell-tale sign that you have some ligament or tendon damage. Your body is reacting to a weakness in the connective tissue and trying to use your muscles to compensate. I used to get them in my VMO all the time. They went away after my knee was fixed. HTH, Doug dougfromct2002@... > > Pain > > > > I was diagnosed with Chondromalacia several months ago. Guest guest
Also, this makes it hard for docs to figure out what's wrong with you. Unfortunately, you'll have to be your own detectives. There's a ton of good and little-known info on the Web -- just be sure it's got good credentials behind it. Try not to let your desperation (we're all desperate here) color your interpretation of a claim. Also, I don't know where you're from, but the US FDA has this nasty little habit (confirmed by one of my docs) of letting European doctors try things out on their patients, and after they've been *successful* for TWENTY YEARS, they'll consider piloting a study over here. Guest guest
Ann and Doug: Many thanks for your info. I have a difficult time determining just exactly where the pain is located, but I do know it is from the knee area somewhere. At other times, it is in my thumbs. This usually goes away after running hot water over them, and most happens upon awakening. Last night was awful. I could not sleep, and both legs (not kneecaps specifically)throbbed for about three hours. I will continue to do my homework on the internet, and I am thinking positive that when summer comes, this will go away. I live in Washington state. Guest guest
Hey Mike: My doctor used prolotherapy injections to repair and tighten-up my knee. The tendon that attaches the VMO to the knee was weak and that was causing the spasms (twitches). As I understand it, the muscle tries to compensate for the weak joint and, subsequently, gets overworked and damaged -- thus the spasms. My guess is that 90% of the people in this Group, regardless of what they believe the problem is, could benefit from prolotherapy. I've done enough reading from credible, referenced, scientific sources to firmly believe in the technique. Plus, from my own experiences, I know it works. Here's a good article: http://home.att.net/~drdaveharris/prolotherapy/knee_reeves.pdf You'll need Adobe to read it. The hard part is finding a good doc who uses prolotherapy in his practice. There are hundreds of them, but I can only personally vouch for two: Dr. Cohen in Danbury, CT http://www.imaginelifewithoutpain.com Dr. Bachrach in New York, NY http://www.bonesdoctor.com You can find plenty more at these sites: http://www.aaomed.org http://www.getprolo.com I know I am being a little heavy-handed in recommending prolotherapy, but I really believe that it works and it can benefit the majority of the members of this Group. At least do the research. I've given you a good start. Good luck, and feel free to ask more questions. Take care, Doug dougfromct2002@... > > Re: Pain > > > your calf spasms are a tell-tale sign that you have some > > ligament or tendon damage. Guest guest
ive read that acupuncture has the same effect as prolotherapy. has anyone tried acupuncture? Guest guest
I don't know where you read that, but whoever wrote it was misinformed. Prolotherapy actually strengthens ligaments and tendons by using an irritating solution to stimulate the body to heal itself. Acupuncture is inserting dry needles into parts of the body. Although acupunture may help reduce pain by blocking some nerve signals or whatever it is supposed to do, I don't believe it can help rebuild damaged connective tissues the way prolotherapy can. Hope that helps, Doug > ive read that acupuncture has the same effect as prolotherapy. has anyone tried acupuncture?
Guest guest
You are so right and Simone! I don't think there IS any way to describe the pain we are in. I'm pretty stubborn, cause I sincerely hate taking pain meds, so when I do my hubby knows I must really be hurting. Since my revision it feels like I'm carrying around something huge in my lower back that just aches all the time. What really bugs me is that I can hear something clanking when I walk....I know it's hardware hitting some bone. Ugh. What frightens me so is that this is all so new, nobody really knows what to expect in the future. Guest guest
Hi I too get a clunking noise when I lay down and move my legs, I have been told to do bike riding but on a stationery bike as this will help my knees!!! Well to be honest I couldnt give a Monkeys *cough* about my knees, my back is what concerns me. I have been trying to write a list to describe pain but its just so hard, we are all individual when it comes to pain and some have higher thresholds than others, but I have to try and describe it to the surgeon if I am expecting him to help me. The future................hmmmm, not sure I even wanna go there! :-D Take care and best wishes Simone aka Nutty Re: Pain You are so right and Simone! I have tried Advil liquid gel caps extra strength, Celebrex, Naproxin and Vioxx. Right now I am on Naproxin, but am still not feeling that the pain is going away ! I am a mother of 2 boys (2 1/2 years and 2 1/2 mos year old), I need to be able to not have this pain so I can run around etc. Any suggestions of other drugs out there?? Guest guest
My las post was so full of grammatical errors that I decided to write it again! Hi Ann, My CP pain went away with advil at the beggining and afterwards with Vioxx. Now that I am better, I do not take anything but when you are on pills for CP is important to not over due activity, take them consistently, and exercise (I mean appropriate exercise for CP). Nothing took the pain of CP for me as good as stretching and doing the exercises recommended by my PT. Are you on physical therapy? That is the best option for CP. Be consistent. Be patient. I was and I am better. Another option for pain is ICE. Works well for me! Best luck. > I am wondering what all of you have been taking for the > pain?? Guest guest
You might try mixing glucosamine and Vioxx. That seems to give me more pain and inflammation relief than Vioxx alone. Outside of that, I ended up going to tylenol/codiene before my surgeries, but this isn't a blend I would recommend for someone who wants to function in this world. Have you tried cortisone injections into the knee? There was total relief with it in my case, but it only lasted 3-4 days. Guest guest
I believe that my CP is caused by tight tissues -- vastus lateralis, hams, and a contraction going on in my hip muscles. Guest guest
I take 2000 mg of Glucosamine a day -- been doing it for over a year. I had Synvisc injections that helped ease the pain of passive bending, but I still couldn't walk farther than a couple of blocks. Guest guest
Hi , I always found ice packs, ice massage were better than taking the pills. Plus, with stomach problems, that is why I lean towards the ice. Of course, I'm not trying to chase down 2 kids, not sure how realistic of a suggestion it is time wise. I could imagine the trouble the older one would get in when mommy starts to ice her knee. Good luck, Connie > I am wondering what all of you have been taking for the > pain?? Guest guest
Hi - welcome! Yes, please see your doc tomorrow. You should never be in severe pain, and shpould always get quick help. If i'm understanding you correctly, you were " nicely resticted and losing well " - but then started having this severe pain? (I don't think you'd consider yourself " nicely restricted " if you were having bad pain continually since the fill!) It's likely simply that your fill is too tight, but any new severe pain is also a symtom of possible band slippage that you must never ignore, as it will only get worse. Please, until you see the doc tomorrow, have *only* thin fluids. Don't even attempt solids. your goal right now is to prevent dehydration until you can get an unfill. Hot tea or hot apple juice/cider usually works best, 1 tsp at a time. Fine to add some honey for some calories. If for any reason, you cannot get to the doc tomowrrow because of the weather, get his ok by phone to start some Pepcid Complete(over the counter) until you can see him. This will suppress stomach acid, which is only making things worse, and soothe your irritated stoma and pouch. Get only the chewable kind, not the tablets! Also, use a warm heating pad on your chest several times a day. This will relax the stoma, feel good, and help it rest and heal. After you see the doc and know what is going on, ask again, if you like, about the signs of a too-tight fill, and the ways to tell if a fill is just right. It's easy to get in trouble with a too-tight fill, or from other things, and the best thing is knowledge and prevention. good luck tomorrow - please let us know how you are. Guest guest
Hello again: Well I went to the MD yesterday, and he unfilled my Lap-Band (all the way). He said it was to tight and that is why I was having the pain. I didn't start out having the pain until around Christmas time-I was wrong about my fiil date-I was filled on the 4th of December. I had several weeks that were pain free, just this past week had the pain become so apparent. My MD did say however that it may have felt fine before, but became gradually more irritated as time went on. I ended up rather dehydrated and nauseated and had a lovely overnight stay in the hospital for IV fluid rehydration. I am feeling much better and I am also pain free. I had an UGI this AM and it was negative-no slippage or any other structural problems (thank goodness!) So I will have to be on my best behavior with an empty band for at least the next two weeks. I don't want to gain back what I worked so hard to loose and I know I need to take it easy and use this time to heal.
