Guest guest
as a child i walked in leg braces but i really couldnt see the point as i was much more mobile in my wheelchair. i can see walking in leg braces as being a good form of exercise but it really sucks as a way to get around and get on with life. i think too often docs get carried away with people walking come hell or high water even if quality of life is much better using wheels. it fits in with the general weird fear people often have about wheelchairs! linda Re: Pain The doctors say they will need to be cut in the future, in order to keep her in a standing position. Guest guest
I really don't think she will walk again. She has the early stages of scholosis, they say that her standing will keep it from getting worse for a bit. I don't think it's worth getting tendon surgery if youre going to get scoliosis anyway. Guest guest
, I have swollen feet and they are not sensitive to touch, but only if someone presses hard into my soles. You say you are a high type 2. I think the whole typing thing is weird too, like Jeni, but want to point out the stronger you are the less likely you will have major contractures b/c you can move your extremities by yourself. That ability is just like constant ROM. Those of us who are like quads or have little strength to move our own extremities most likely have severe contractures, regardless of how much stretching or ROM someone does on us. 30 mins of painful stretching will not combat all day in a sitting position, arms not moved constantly for us, etc. Kimi In a message dated 12/29/2005 5:39:59 A.M. Sometimes the shapes of our bodies may have taken this shape because not of stretching which then causes us pain also. I'd rather be somewhat flexible and take the pain than the pain we sometimes suffer because of contractures. Stretching pains usually go away but sometimes we can be in pain for a long or in constant pain due to the way our bodies have shaped over the years. I have an old brother who never did PT and he is shaped terriblely, he has contractures in almost every part of his joints including his neck which is now stuck at an angle. All his fingers and toes are crossed over and you can't open the hands at all. I know don't compare one person against another. I did the stretching and still do except I don't do it it on 1 leg. I fell when I was younger and didn't do stretches because of the pain. It now has little flex to it. In fact it was broke 1 year ago because of being moved improperly. Now i've got pain that won't go away. The rest of me is ok just a little contracture in my good leg at the knee. That is believed to be coming from getting old and osteoperosis. I'm a type high 2. My opinion keep up with the stretches. It your new at it, you will learn over time. Just try to be aware of her reactions during stretching. Slow down some and see what kind of reaction you get. Sometimes starting out slow helps then pick it up more. Maybe she needs time to get useful to it all. Remember she is little and this is new to her too. I have pain when anybody touches my feet and legs, especially the feet. Does she have high arches? That's what caused me most pain. I now have edema ( excess fluid) and my feet swell, don't even think about touching them then. The pain of touch is so terrible I almost can't stand it. I can't figure out is it the nerve endings. Taking a shower and having water spray on just about doubles me over. I can't stand shoes, sometimes socks too. I just can't figure out why. Does anybody have this? . Guest guest
You're absolutely right, Kimi. Sitting in a wheelchair for several hours during the day totally outweigh the benefits of stretching and pain. Contractures win every time. I can move my arms and legs and I had little stretching during childhood. It was torture and it was for nothing, in my case. I'm sure it helps some people with SMA. But it's a tough call to make which person will benefit. Plus, too much stretching and pt leads to faster muscle degeneration, one MD doctor told me. I can't stand the thought of causing a child pain when, forgive me for saying this, that child will have to go through a lifetime of many other forms of physical and emotional pain. Spare them that pain during their childhood. Maybe I am totally wrong, but from what I went through, if my child had my disease, I wouldn't put him/her through anything remotely painful, especially since it will have no long term benefit. If some of you guys disagree with me, please don't pounce on me with verbal attacks. Meg. Guest guest
Hi All, I had my ban surger on 2/7/07 and all seem to go well. That was a Wednesday and Thursday I only had a headache, and Friday I was ok t go home. Trip was long by car but uneventful. Saturday morning I started having this pain that felt like I had been struck by a " bolt of lightening " to the left side about 2-3 inches from my belly button when I bent, or got in or out of bed and other movements. I emailed and asked about it and was told that Dr. A attaches the port to a muscle and I must of pulled a muscle, but it would go away in time. I also have that terrible left shoulder pain, but with heat med and the heating pad, that stops hurting for a while. Has anyone else had this bad experience of muscular pain when moving? Newby so hope I am doing this correctly. If not I am sure someone will let me know. lol Joyce > > Hi, : I had a similar pain at one time. Lasted about a day and kind of > hurt to move. Guest guest
Joyce... Most people have the pain you are describing. During surgery they fill your abdominal area with gas to expand your belly. This way Dr. A can see what he is doing and it makes it easier for him to poke around. When they expand your belly they do it with an on going pressure and it does tend to stretch muscles and push/pull things around. This does cause discomfort later. The port, you are correct. The port is actually sewn into the fascia, this is connective tissue that kinda holds everything together. It is on top of the muscle and below fat. It is also the last thing to heal and the last bit of discomfort to go away. Also, you might look on your OR report and see if Dr. A fixed a hernia. If he did that will add a little more time to your healing. Look for the words " Hiatus " and " stitch " and if they are in the same paragraph, he likely repaired a hernia. That can cause pain all the way to the side of your neck. But it isn't really " pain " per se, it's more discomfort. Something you are aware of if you take a deep breath or move in a certain way. Walk, walk, walk, and then walk some more. That is the #1 activity that will help shorten the time it will hurt. Heating pads, your liquid Tylenol, and then more walking will help. ;o) Congrats on getting banded! Guest guest
Dr. Aceves is right. Your abdominal muscle has actually been through trauma so it is very tender at this point. Just be careful the way you move, use a heating pad, and it will get better. The shoulder pain is a result of the gas they use during surgery. That too will pass. Although that may not make you feel any better, please know that you are not experiencing anything unusual or rare...just a few of the things you have to deal with right after surgery. Glad to hear all went well. Life does get easier, I PROMISE! Stick to the clear liquids and mark the days off the calendar and celebrate with some sugar free pudding when you hit day 14! It will amaze you how wonderful that will taste! Lots of us have been where you are now and YOU WILL MAKE IT! Life is GRAND! Guest guest
Joyce, I hurt like that for a good couple of weeks in fact I would hold my stomach when I got out of bed our a chair, but I promise it goes away. The shoulder pain your feeling is just gas from your operation of putting the band in they fill you full of gas when they insert the band and thats what your feeling. oyce <jmallul@...> wrote: Hi All,I had my ban surger on 2/7/07 and all seem to go well. That was a Wednesday and Thursday I only had a headache, and Friday I was ok t go home. Trip was long by car but uneventful. Saturday morning I started having this pain that felt like I had been struck by a "bolt of lightening" to the left side about 2-3 inches from my belly button when I bent, or got in or out of bed and other movements. I emailed and asked about it and was told that Dr. A attaches the port to a muscle and I must of pulled a muscle, but it would go away in time. I also have that terrible left shoulder pain, but with heat med and the heating pad, that stops hurting for a while. Has anyone else had this bad experience of muscular pain when moving?Newby so hope I am doing this correctly. If not I am sure someone will let me know. lolJoyce>> Hi, : I had a similar pain at one time. Lasted about a day and kind of > hurt to move. I think mine was gas. Guest guest
Posted by: " mwasham123 " michelle.washam@... mwasham123 ....what are the symptoms of a slipped band? I have been banded for 2.5 years....My back hurts kind of between my shoulderblades and lower. My gut hurts after I eat too. All I can imagine is that my band has slipped on down to my intestines. ..... I'm eating small bites and all that and not overeating. ...I have endometreosis (sp?) and thought for a while that was what was going on. I think I'm still having pain with that but if I didn't have the band, then I would just think it was something else. I live 4 hours away from my doctor. It's Spiegel in Houston. What do ya'll think??? *** Hello . here. I am not familiar with the endoscope process. Did they use CO2 to inflate your stomach and upper GI to use the endoscope? If they did this, the inflation may have irritated where the Band is attached to the stomach and you may need to return to the post-op food regiment for 2-3 weeks to allow the swelling to go down. Then possibly have a barium swallow under the floro to check things out before returning to regular foods. For this process I would have thought that the band would have to be unfilled. Also, where do you live? If you are close to the Mexico border, there may be some fill doctors that could do your fills with a floro affordably and closer than Houston. Hope you get better soon. Guest guest
I agree, sounds like a gallbladder thing!! Get thee to the doctor!!! *GRIN* Rude/Dr.Kuri July 28,2005 225/163/150 A PB is a " productive burp, " not a barf, vomit, or throw up. It can be accompanied by " sliming " or not. PBs occur most often when one has failed to chew properly, taken a to large bite, or eaten to fast. There is no stomach acid when one has PBd. It is simply comprised of the food one has eaten coming up in exactly the same condition it went down. If you have PBd,stop eating immediately and move to liquids for at least one meal, two is better. Hot liquids are better for your stoma than cold ones. If you are still swollen the next day, remain on liquids. If not, on the second day resume regular eating patterns. __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Thank you for all who responded to my post. I have figured it out. I was taking too much advil and I guess caused my stomach and insides to bleed. I'm trying to avoid a hysterectomy until my husband comes home from Iraq. I have 5 months to go. So, I've switched to Tylenol for pain and will use advil from now on very sparingly. I've been told before to be careful taking advil products with the band. It may or may not have been the band that made it worse. I've taken more advil in the last 2 months than I have my entire life. However, Let me say I NEVER took more than the recommended dose on the side of the bottle and this was all Dr prescribed. I LEARNED my lesson well! Of course I have high stress right now (not just my husband) and I'm sure that helped some too. Again, thanks for listening. Since I've been off Advil products for 3 days, I'm MUCH, MUCH better. > > IF you can feel it, what are the symptoms of a slipped band? I have > been banded for 2.5 years. Guest guest
Those of us with bands should NEVER take aspirin, advil, or any other NSAIDS. They are bad for the stomach for everyone, particularly if you have a band. I'm amazed your band doc didn't tell you that. I pray that you'll get better and your husband will be home safe and sound. You're a brave woman and he's a brave man. Thanks to both of you for your service. dan " Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.
