Guest guest
Marie, You sound like you are having your knee done at the same hospital I did! I had a class also and was in a special wing for joint replacements also. The nurses were so very experienced in joint replacement care and they knew exactly what you needed if you had a question or problem. It made me feel so confident going into this experience. It sounds like you are well prepared also. Good Luck with your surgery. Pat in Pennsylvania bilateral TKR Aug. 2010 Re: Knee replacement next week WOW!!! I am a bit overwhelmed and feeling a lot more support due to the abundance of your replies. Surgery is tomorrow. I have had all my blood work done, blood thinner test done, EKG and chest x-ray -- passing all! Today I had my joint replacement seminar. I pretty much know that surgical l and recovery aspect cuz of my right knee being done in 2004. OMG the hospital really does things a lot differently now. There is a separate wing of a floor set aside for ONLY joint replacements. All of the nurses are trained in joint recovery. When I had my right knee done I was handed over to a student nurse. She was a very nice person, but not nearly trained enough, if you know what I mean. I'll try to answer a few questions: Pat, the reason I'm going to a rehab is because there will be 2 kids under 3 years old at the house when I get home. I need to learn how to be steady on my feet dodging toys and whatnot. Donna I'm sure impressed at your healing rate. Since you've have both done, how would I get into the car to drive? I have tried and tried several different ways and nothing where I can get in without moving to a 90 degree angle. YIKES I report to the hospital at 9:30 with surgery at 11:30. If the rehab place I go to has Wi-Fi I will log on. Take care and God Bless, Marie
Guest guest
Good Luck , Marie. With good luck, you may have that 90 degrees when you leave rehab. If not, sit on the back seat and pull yourself in with your arms. OR have someone pull from the other end. I think that's what I did to get into a car after four days post TKR. As I was still on heavy pain meds, I'm a bit fuzzy on this. Guest guest
Hi Marie: To add to what Joan said - Have someone pile up pillows against the driver side back door (assuming a 4-door?). Then YOU stand by the open rear passenger door and kinda hook your rear end on the back seat. Using your arms, you can haul/pull yourself in, sitting sideways. Depending on the size of your car (mine is a mid-SUV) you can have your operated leg pretty flat on the seat (this is assuming the op. leg is the R. leg - if L. leg, put pillows on other side of car) and the good leg can go either beside it or on the floor. Of course, if you have a van, you could remove one rear seat and have a comfy seat on the floor? I had a big foot surgery (triple arthrodesis) and rode sideways in the back seat for 2 months, hubby driving, when I had to go anywhere. But when I got my new knee (Oct. '09), that's when we " invented " this way to sit in a car without 90 degrees. And doing time in rehab is a good idea. ///Adrienne ======================================================= On 5/3/2011 5:45 AM, Joan Kell wrote: > > Good Luck , Marie. Guest guest
So nice to read success stories. I am thinking of everyone who has just had surgery or are going into it soon. Good Luck with your recoveries. Pat in Pennsylvania Re: Knee replacement next week Good luck and I am praying for you. Had my second knee done April 19th and has been a great & easier recovery Sent from my MetroPCS Wireless Phone
