Hi

I had a 3-in-1 surgery in November 1999; mastoidectomy to remove the cholesteatoma, tympanoplasty (renewal of the eardrum) and ossiculoplasty (placement of a TORP). I think mine was cadaver bones - not titanium as seems to be more frequently implanted these days. My recovery was slow because I tried too to do too much too soon. I tried to go back to work after a few days (if memory serves me right) and ended up back home for 2 more weeks recovering from an ear infection and I was totally drained - the ear infection probably got the better of me as I was run down from trying to work too soon - I was the Office Manager in a busy office, who loved her job (and I still do!). I ended up working part-time in December, taking the Christmas holidays to recover fully and by early January I was back to 'normal' and working full-time. My hearing wasn't perfect - I wore BTE aids and likely because of this, I suffered almost constant ear infections (otitis media and otitis externa).

In March 03, I had the mother of all infections, which destroyed the TORP. After that, I was offered the option of further reconstruction or a BAHA and I went for a BAHA, which I had implanted in November 2003.

I was (and am still) prone to infection, hence what happened. I believe that most of those who have a TORP have a successful restoration of hearing (to at least an acceptable level).

Hope this helps.

TORP

Hey everyone,I'd love to get some information from people who've had a TORP surgery. How long was the recovery? How successful was the surgery in restoring your hearing? How easy is it to knock the TORP out of position once you are past the recovery period? Thanks so much,

Hi ,

I recently had a TORP prosthesis surgery and it went great. I took

pain meds for about two days and really felt well after a week. It

has been about 5 weeks post op now, and my hearing is pretty much

normal. I notice that I can hear better with my right ear, but the

left ear is almost the same. It is pretty amazing! I will have my

hearing tested in June and will report on here exactly what I am at

now. However, I know it is in the normal range, otherwise, I wouldn't

hear so well. I wasn't expecting such great results after reading

posts on here, but it is amazing. My otologist knew what he was doing

and now I have bilateral hearing!
