Guest guest
Neil, tympanometry is testing the elasticity of the eardrum ie how much it can vibrate. A flatter line means it vibrates less and therefore the ability to conduct sound is slightly impaired. In your case, it sounds as if they're using the test to determine the status of the middle ear. Fluid (or some other object) behind the eardrum would impede vibration. Calcification of the eardrum, retraction pocket or perforation would also impede the vibration. A significant perforation would result in a completely flat line on the chart. These things would usually be visible without such a test. So yes, I think they are looking for middle problems but the test is not specific. A suspected ctoma usually requires a CT scan for confirmation. Have you already had one of those? Phil I've had 4 tympanometry tests in China now . It seems that the ear pressure in my ear is improving and the MEP today was -150 dap .Originally it was -235 dap . The curve however is much flatter than the one for my right ear . The Y axis does not exceed 0.70 ml . To be honest I'm not so sure how to interpret these results .Can these tests indicate if you may have cholesteatoma? Still not sure what is causing my ear problems here!RegardsNeil No virus found in this incoming message.Checked by AVG Free Edition.Version: 7.1.371 / Virus Database: 267.14.15/223 - Release Date: 06/01/06 No virus found in this outgoing message.
