Guest guest
The Attic.....again!!! this one had me confused for a while. the attic is one of the most common areas to get a cholesteatoma. the middle ear which is the area behind the ear drum, is also called the " typanum " . this is the aera where the three small hearing bones or ossicles are. the middle ear space or tympanum has an area to the top, like a little caved out bit called the " epitympanum " , this is the area also known as the attic. the roof of this attic is the thin plate of bone that separates the middle ear from the brain. i attach some diagrams; 1. the first one shows the middle ear and attic area. it shows the position of the small bones and a c-toma in situ. 2. the second shows the middle ear and attic, with no c-toma. 3. the third is a picture of a c-toma in situ behind the ear drum, as though you were looking into the ear from the ear canal or auditory meatus. Guest guest
Hi Maureen Welcome to the group. Please let us know how 's appt goes on the 22nd. My daughter Alyssa has had recurrent c-toma in the attic area of her left ear three times, and may have it starting in her right ear, we dont know yet. Her next appt is Monday. This disease is very difficult to deal with, especially it's not the type of situation where you go to the doctor and take care of it and thats that. It's a constant worry, a constant chance of recurrence. That's why we're all here, to support each other, to vent and just be here for each other. Glad you found us, and please keep us posted on your son. How old is he? > hi, my name is maureen, my son brian has had 4 surguries on his left ear for > a recurring cholesteatoma. we are changing dr's.(anyone know of anyone who > has had a dr charles woods, from upstate medical syracuse?) we got his records > the other day and read that this tumor is in his attic???i think that means > it's by the brain, that makes me very nervous! we can't get into this dr till > feb 22,for our first appointment. He has been through so much in the last 2 > years! i hate this disease!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 please let me know if > anyone has heard of this dr. thanks maureen (my prayers to all of you !) Guest guest
Hi Gail, Location, location, location. The attic is a particular part of the middle ear space. " attic A small upper space of the middle ear, containing the head of the malleus and the body of the incus. Called also epitympanic recess. " Elsevier Health Sciences All rights owned by Elsevier, Inc. APA | Chicago | Harvard | MLA attic. (2007). In Saunders Comprehensive Veterinary Dictionary. Philadelphia, PA: Elsevier Health Sciences. Retrieved March 03, 2009, from http://www.credoreference.com/entry/6616742/. Citation for the image of the middle ear: [see the attached image] APA | Chicago | Harvard | MLA middle ear. (2006). In Mosby's Dictionary of Medicine, Nursing, & Health Professions. Philadelphia, PA: Elsevier Health Sciences. Retrieved March 03, 2009, from http://www.credoreference.com/entry/6680895/. My guess is that an attic cholesteatoma will be more prone to take out the bones of hearing. Unfortunately for me, my first cholesteatoma was kind of all over the place (including the attic). Like many, I was misdiagnosed for years. I think I've heard that it's the type of cholesteatoma that tends to be caught earlier because it does affect the bones of hearing early on. All the best, Matt gail7678 wrote: > > Hi, > > Does anyone know the difference between an attic cholesteatoma > and a cholesteatoma? > > Thank you > Gail > > --
