Guest guest
, I'm in my 30s and had the same CWD procedure your daughter had one year ago. I go for my annual follow-up this coming Monday. This was the first, and hopefully only, surgery for c-toma. I kept the bandage/cotton ball in for about a month if I recall. The main thing is to keep the wound area from being exposed to water. Did your doctor also inform you of the water restrictions as a result of the CWD procedure? Mine told to me to avoid getting water in the ear at all costs. Having a very active 4yr old daughter, who likes to swim, I've found comfort in buying over the counter ear plugs to avoid the occasional splashing. I haven't gone underwater, and thought this would drive me nuts. But seeing that you have a 9yr, you may want to look into custom fitted ear plugs along with a flexible ear band or swim cap if she swims. As for showering, she needs to be vigilant in keeping water out when shampooing. I've been told if I got water simply tilt the head and let drain as best as possible and once out of the shower put a few drops of 95% ibsorbyl (I can't spell) alcohol (basically grain alcohol). This will help sterilize the ear and it dries quickly. As a side note, its been a little over 4 months since my last visit and hope this one comes with news that I don't have a re-occurrence and will only need to visit every 6 months for general cleaning. Hope this helps, if you have any other specific questions I'll try and answer. -Nate canal wall down surgery Hi, My 9 year old daughter just had her second surgery to remove her c-toma. The first was 4 years ago. This time she had a canal wall down procedure. She is 2 weeks into the recovery and just had the packing removed from the ear. The doctor told us she will take several months to heal. Right now we are filling her ear with bacitracin and then the doctor said we will move to irrigation. We did not expect the follow up care as it wasn't explained before the surgery. We were wondering if anyone would share their experiences with canal wall down so we are prepared to help her recover. How long does it take for the ear to heal? When can she expect to feel "ok" again? and when can she stop wearing the cotton ball in the ear? Thanks, Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Mobile. Try it now. Guest guest
Nate, thanks for the information. We did know that she may never be able to swim and we will need to get custom ear plugs for the shower. Our doctor told us there was a chance she might be able to swim but definitely not this year. Our Doctor also told us the reason to get the canal wall down instead of canal wall up (which she had last time) was that it would never regrow and that she would never need another surgery of this type. I hope that is the case for you and for her.
Guest guest
Coming from someone who has had a Modified Radical which is a version of the CWD, it is a far better way to treat c-toma than a CWU. (When ever I make a statement like this some parent usually who never had this happen to them comes out to attack me as if I'm a dummy) Since my modified radical my c-toma has not come back, I had 2 CWU's prior to the modified radical. I was able to have reconstruction, I swim without plugs. Most claim that the you can't do these if you had a CWD/Modified radical. Totally false, it all depends on how your Doc feels you have healed up. Otologist tend to do more CWD's than CWU's as they are more of a final solution, CWD/Modified Radicals have 85% success rate. Why is that? There are very few places c-toma can hide after a CWD/Modified Radical as all of its taken out and the Doc preps the area for reconstruction if the situation warrents it. My only restrictions are sky diving or skin diving. As to the healing it will take 2 years for your ear canal to totally heal, but it is far less painful than continuing to have CWU's with poor results and never ending operations. I had my last 2 surgery's done by Navy Doc's who are taught to be aggressive with their treatments. They would not even consider doing reconstruction until I was c-toma free for 3 years and it still took my CO's pushing for them to do it. Oh ya forgot to mention, my Modified Radical was 29 years ago. Follow your Doc's instructions, one last thing if at all possible seek a Otologist over a ENT, they know the best treatments... Guest guest
> > My husband will be having the canal wall down surgery soon. If you have had this surgery, please tell me how you did afterwards. How long did it take you to recuperate? How much pain were you in? Please share any information you may have. > Hello, I had my surgury a week ago Friday. I feel great! The first three days were tough. Not from the wound pain (advil worked for me), but the anestethia. The surgury was supposed to be 2 hours which turned into 4 due to the size of the tumor. My surgeon went down the canal as well as behind my ear. Also, my muscles were sore due to the way I was positioned on the table. I should of stretched out before surgury. Thursday I had my packing taken out which felt wonderful. No worries. He will be fine. You will be amazed on how quickly he will heal. I went to lunch and shopping 5 days after my surgery. Today I'm going to the beach. Never would of thought:) Keep in touch.
