And the thirst cannot be quenched for information on available services. With much changing in how special education must operate, it’s more important now than ever for parents and professional to work together. The annual Building Allies Conference for Children with Special Needs brings parents and professionals together to share knowledge, concerns, dreams and ideas. The conference will be September 10 at Springfield High School, 1470 South McCord Road. "Our conference is for parents, family members, teachers, therapists, nurses, social workers, paraprofessionals, physicians and others who feel they have something to contribute or who wish to learn more about life with a child who has a disability," said Joni Dehne, a member of the conference planning committee. The day-long conference will feature a series of presentations and discussions on financial planning, how to be a stronger advocate for your child's needs, effects of violence in the media, therapies, Central Auditory Processing Disorder, and strategies for problem behaviors. The keynote speaker will be Margaret Burley, the Executive Director of the Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities since 1979. Her presentation will focus on the four basic areas of reform brought about by No Child Left Behind: stronger accountability for results, more local freedom, encouraging proven education methods, and more choices for parents. Mrs. Burley also provides a parent perspective. Tom, her youngest son of four children, is 41 years old and is challenged with multiple disabilities from Congenital Rubella Syndrome. Nursing CEU's are pending. Certification is also pending for Continuing Education Credits from the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Department of MR/DD. An application has been submitted to the Ohio Nurses Association. Please call United Health Services for more information about contact hours (419-242-9587). Conference registrations are required.
