Dear Friend of ASO: Please take a moment to scan through the updated roster (following my signature) of the 109th Coalition for Autism Research and Education -- (AKA "The Autism Caucus"), to see if your legislators are on the list. (NOTE: Neither of Ohio's Senators - Mike DeWine or Voinovich are members.)

The goals of the Autism Caucus currently include the following: · Increasing autism awareness for Members of the House of Representatives and policy analysts on Capitol Hill; · Educating them on epidemiology, current scientific knowledge regarding causation and treatment, and the burdens and costs associated with this disorder. · Providing a forum wherein autism-related issues can be debated and discussed; · Expanding federal research into autism spectrum disorders and bringing together government and non-government entities which may play a role in this endeavor; · Enacting legislation to ease the financial burden on affected families and ensuring that the Centers of Excellence created under the Children Health Act of 2000 are established in an effective manner.

The ASA works directly with the Autism Caucus on legislation that will help persons with autism and their families.

Senator Barbara Mikulski (MD) Dear (legislator’s name): I am writing to encourage you to join the Coalition for Autism Research and Education (C.A.R.E.) also called the Congressional Autism Caucus chaired by Representatives Mike Doyle (D PA-18th) and (R NJ-4th). C.A.R.E. works to teach members of Congress about Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) and the related activities and concerns of researchers, advocates, and parents. The current members of C.A.R.E. want to improve research, education, and support services for people who have an ASD. C.A.R.E. also plans to hold meetings where issues related to ASDs and possible answers to problems can be talked about. We want you to be a part of this exciting group. Autism directly affects our family. (share a personal story about your loved one with autism). Please join the caucus and become more informed about the issues facing persons with autism and their families like ours in Ohio and across America. Sincerely, (your name)
