Guest guest
I WAS WONDERING- WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MASTOIDECTOMY AND TYMPANOPLASTY? AND IS EITHER OF THEM THE SAME AS A CARTILAGE GRAFT?

Mastoidectomy, according to <http://dictionary.com> is - mas.toid.ec.to.my Pronunciation Key (mstoi-dkt-m) n. pl. mas.toid.ec.to.mies Surgical removal of mastoid cells or part or all of the mastoid process. Source: The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition Copyright © 2000 by Houghton Mifflin Company. Published by Houghton Mifflin Company. All rights reserved. While tympanoplasty is - tym.pa.no.plas.ty Pronunciation Key (tmp-n-plst, -n-) n. pl. tym.pa.no.plas.ties Surgical repair or reconstruction of the middle ear. -------------- [tympan(um) + -plasty.] Source: The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition Copyright © 2000 by Houghton Mifflin Company. So, in summary, a mastoidectomy is where the surgeon has to remove part of the mastoid process (the bone seperating the middle ear and brain, I think) - in our cases to remove the c-toma cells, while the tympanoplasty includes reconstruction of the middle ear bones, as well as repair of the ear drum (which is performed by using a skin graft from a muscle located near the ear, from what my consultant told me after my first op.). OK, I *think tympanoplasty is when they graft a new eardrum, mastiodectomy is the actual drilling of the mastoid bone behind the ear and a cartilage graft is when they take a piece of cartilage (like the little round piece that sticks out on the front part of your ear) and use it to fill a space during surgery. Someone correct me if I'm wrong .
Guest guest
Mastoidectomy is the " removal " of the mastoid which is behind the ear. It is supposed to be an air cavity that helps with the maintenance of pressure in the ear. On many people this area gets filled with scar tissue or cholesteatoma and so they " remove " or acutally rebuild it. this is often where the scar behind the ear comes from. The tympanoplasty is (tympany is your ear drum)is cutting and laying back the ear drum to gain entrance to the middle ear. May include putting tubes in the ear. I'm not sure what a cartilage graft is. I know my eardrum was grafted but cartilage wasn't used but the sheath to the muscles. My second tympanoplasty was done using a piece of skin from the back of the tragus, which is the little bump coming out from your head, right above the ear lobe. That seems to be the general consensus (reconstruction of the ear drum) - I was just paraphrasing the dictonary.com entries I'd dug up. I suppose it would have been better if I'd tracked down a medical dictionary on the net (should one exist without requiring high subscription fees!). Thanks for the info re: tragus - I seem to remember my consultant telling me somthing similar, but it was the day after my op, so I was a little unsure where exactly he meant (being a little too impatient to escape the hospital ;-). Is the tragus a muscle? -- Pete

I'm glad to see that it actually has a name. During my first surgery, my doctor grafted a new ear drum but the negative pressure in my ear caused it to pull in and attach to the inside of my ear. My doctor had to go back in and make a new ear drum. This second one he made a little stiffer by taking cartilage from my tragus. I never knew how to explain where he got the cartilage from - I didn't know that thing had a name.
