Guest guest
This past Wednesday's chat was on Potty Training. (Last Wed of every month by ParentsChat). Here are a few things that may help with potty training. One time when my son was constipated I put hot water in the toilet bowl for steam effect and added epsom salts to the water. I had my son sit on the toilet and had him raise his arms over his head and pretend he was scratching his head and under his arm pits like a monkey. - (This helps stretch the body and gives the intestines more movement.) Within about 5 minutes my son had a BM -- it really works. If someone needs to regulate a BM pattern for their child they can try this method daily at a set time and eventually a pattern may occur. The group also mentioned other basic potty training tips such as having the child go on the potty every 3 hours on a set time with a timer that dings so the child hears the bell and the bell becomes a auditory reminder to use the potty. Most of our children are visual learners so having picture of a clock with the times to go will also help. A good book to recommend for toilet training is: Toilet Training for Individuals with Autism - this is a link to a place to order the book OR have your patients check in their local library. I was fortunate to have one available in my local library. There are also good videos for encouraging potty use, my son really liked the potty training videos that are made for preschool children, he was encouraged by seeing other children around his age in a video that encourages potty use. If anyone wants to add to this topic please feel free to write in and tell us your tips. Yours Truly, n
