Guest guest
Hi all.. I hope you are all keeping warm! I was wondering if anyone would be interested in getting together to just get to know each other.. share stories, ideas and information. I have a 3 1/2 yr old who is diagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder w/ADD.. and we are always learning of new things that are available to us that we were clueless about earlier. We were clueless when it came to his first IEP meeting, and after having someone look over what we did come up with, they helped us see that we weren't getting everything that our son needed so we are just now (first IEP meeting was in April) getting a 2nd IEP meeting to update and revamp it.. I was told of some support groups but most were either on the east side, or met during the day, which excluded my husband, or I could not bring my kids to it, and if any of you are like us, babysitting comes at a premium.. We know our son needs more and that there should be more out there.. we want to be able to take advantage of all the programs that are available.. but where do we get the list of the programs? We figure if we have these questions we are probably not alone.. that there may be other parents who are either newly diagnosed, or have been going thru the motions just not sure what else to do. We could learn from parents who have been there and may know what else we could be doing, who have tried different methods and know of what is out there.. Also how do they handle siblings, and share the attention so that the other child(ren) don't feel left out or like they have to act out to get attention.. I have so many questions.. and doctors and professionals can help so much.. but I think that other parents who have been there... can give better advice than a doctor reading from a text book, any day! My church, which is located in Brook Park, is offering the use of their building.. a large fellowship hall with 2 classrooms and a nursery so that some children can be brought as well.. there is no charge... I'll even provide the coffee and water... just looking to get together with other parents to talk and share things with.. moms, dads, grandparents, friends, just anyone who wants to share their experiences or to learn about what we can do to better serve our children's needs. So if this is something that may interest you, please contact me and if we get enough interest, we'll plan a get together. We can plan something on an evening during the week or even on the weekend sometime.. it's all open for discussion..
