Guest guest
I have heard that the correct "official" name for an accoustic neuroma is Schwannoma, after the man who first discovered that type of tumour. I can't comment on anything else though. Maybe it's possible you have both. Maybe you could see an Otologist - a doctor who specialises in only ears. Good luck to you at this difficult time. Kazzy :-) Multiple Diagnosis I am confused as to what I have, when I underwent an open MRI in August the Radioligist said that I have an acoustic neuroma, then a neurosurgeon said I have a Trigeminal Shwannoma. Now I have had a Petrous Bone CT scan and another neurosurgeon said I have a Cholesteatoma. Has anyone else had multiple diagnosis ? How do I know whom to believe ? Should I try a different type of specialist, such as an ENT. doctor ? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.Thanks.Rick
Guest guest
Hi Rick, as far as I'm aware Acoustic Neuroma and Schwannoma are different names for the same thing - referring to a tumour that lies on the on the Acoustic Nerve, which means it's more of an Inner Ear problem than the Middle Ear which is where nearly all ctomas would be located. The specialist who would have the best experience of dealing with an Acoustic Neuroma is a Neurotologist (aka a Skull-based Surgeon). In fact if you check around you'll find that's the disease they deal with most often. Good luck with finding the right surgeon. Guest guest
Hi Rick: I second Phil's recommendation that you see a Neurotologist. They specialize in the kind of surgery needed to remove an acoustic neuroma. When I first started having problems and they were running tests on me I was afraid I might have an acoustic neuroma. However, after I did an audiogram the audiologist was able to rule out acoustic neuroma based on the results. The acoustic neuroma would affect hearing in the inner ear, and she was able to tell that my inner ear hearing was okay, just my middle ear was messed up.
