I can't speak for everyone, but, I had my surgery 44 years ago (I was 4) and I still

have balance problems, mostly when I am recovering from a cold (like now).

You might check with your doctor to see if maybe you have fluid build up or something.

It's even worse if I take benadryl!

My 10 year old son has had severe anxiety every since about the time

the cholesteatoma was growing (a year before his actual surgery or us

discovering he had it). I often wonder if it is associated in any

way. I'd be interested to hear if other people with cholesteatoma

have anxiety?

Actally I have had alot of anxiety ever since I got diagnosed I wonder too If it associated. Simply because I just start feeling anxious out of the blue for no reason.I had never been like this before.

I don't remember having any anxiety when I was young. My parents were much more

worried than I was. I was 8 or 9 before I could go swimming without a swim cap

because my Mom didn't want me to get my ear wet.

If it is the ctoma that is causing his anxiety, just assure him that there are many

people that have had this problem and some have grown up to be perfectly normal

humans. The rest of us are still odd, but, we survive.

Mine certainly hasn't slowed me down. I even get to ride the 'More Intense' side of Mission Space at EPCOT without any problems.

Good Luck!

I have been looking around the net and from what i can gather their is

serious research going in to this connection between ears (not

nessicerally cholesteatoma's) and anxiety.

When you think about it the symptoms of ear problems like imbalance etc

are very similar to anxiety symptoms.

I know i have real problems with anxiety wether this is to do with my

ears or not i really dont know, i guess research and time will tell.

I just found out in July that I have a cholesteatoma. What sent me

to the doctor was the dizziness/disequalibrium. I sound just like

you I am already a anxious/nervous type person and have been for

years - these weird feelings do not work well with my personality -

however I don't have much of a choice - I am hoping when I have my c-

toma removed next week Sept. 25, 2008 that I won't feel this way

anymore. Were you dizzy after your first surgery? Are you doing

better with all your strange feelings?

I had some terrible vertigo before I had my cholesteatoma removed. Mine was compounded by the eustachian tube dysfunction that I have always had. I'd get the inverted ear drum and a feeling of fullness and then with ANY change in elevation - even a couple hundred feet, I'd be spinning like I was drunk and completely unable to cope. Before I was diagnosed with cholesteatoma, I went through three docs and two sets of CAT scans with no solution. Finally, one of the old docs who was retiring suggested a tube in my ear. And it worked! The only reason I found out I had a cholesteatoma was that my tube came out and I had the vertigo again and a CT scan finally showed the mass. My surgeon told me that he could not see anything at all in the geography of the interior of my ear that would indicate a problem with vertigo - but I

can tell you that I had it and had it bad! I don't know what the link is, but I wish you luck!

Once the cholesteatoma was removed did your vertigo go away? I am

very nervous about having the surgery wondering if I am going to

wake up with the world spinning, ect. I have heard it is hard to

eat after surgery and I am a very thin person already. I have never

had any kind of surgery - now I am having ear surgery with a repair

at the base of my skull (near brain surgery - sounds a little scary).

I can't speak to the vertigo issue because I've been lucky enough not to

have any problems with that. However, I can speak to eating after

surgery because I've screwed it up enough. If the vertigo does

disappear after surgery, you'll only have the anesthetic to deal with.

You may be a bit nauseous from that, but that will be gone after a very

brief period. At that point, start drinking a lot of water because

you'll be dehydrated from the ordeal. I finally asked a doctor to

quantify what that was and he suggested 8 ounces an hour for every hour

I was awake. That will certainly keep you well hydrated and busy going

to the bathroom. That's okay though, the trips will help work out the

anesthetic anyway. It will take the anesthetic 3 or 4 days to wear off,

so for at least the first two they recommend the " BRAT " diet -

bananas-rice-applesauce-toast. By the third day, you'll probably want

something more substantial. Give it a try, but go easy ... small

meals. Keep up the water intake. If you let yourself get dehydrated,

trust me ... you will feel really awful and sick to your stomach. Don't

let that happen. Keep in mind that the water should keep you feeling

good. It will be okay to mix in other drinks with taste, but make sure

that a lot is water and you should do fine. For the food, eat when you

feel like it. Just eat light at first like I indicated above.

Remember, the body can typically go without food for close to a month!

There's no need to panic.

All the best,

Matt

Hi

Well, its hard to say, because my surgeon put in a more permanent tube "just in case". I did not suffer any vertigo post-surgery, and did not have any facial paralysis or loss of taste or headache or anything. I actually felt pretty good after surgery and the most noticeable side effect for me was fatigue. I "go go go" and have a toddler, so I really notice when my energy is depleted. I would highly recommend not overestimating your body's ability to cope and have help on hand in the event that you need it. I went back to work a week after the surgery and was OK, but it was sure nice having someone help me out in the evenings with the household stuff, meals, and whatnot so that I could just rest.

This group has been a great resource for me. I am looking forward to my second stage surgery next year and the possibility of hearing restoration. I was really freaked out with the first surgery, but now I find it a great benefit to the alternative of continued discomfort without any good answer.

Good luck to you.
