Guest guest
Hi all, I just wanted to say something about my experience with the CWD procedure. It has been six months now, I went from severe hearing loss to moderate/mild hearing loss. I was told before the surgery that the doc would be going in behind the ear and when he got in if it was bad enough he would also need to go in through the ear canal. It was bad. The c-toma was completely wrapped around my facial nerve, all of my bones were taken, and it had gone through the temporal bone and my brain was falling into my mastoid cavity. I'm glad they did whatever they had to do to make me better. At first I was very freaked out over the size of my ear canal, but now I can't tell and neither can anyone else. I, like every other human on this planet, am my own worse critic. My ear was not widened for cleaning purposes, as far as cosmetic reasons go no one can tell, I work with people of all ages, boys and girls, more young than old, I own a comic book store and sometimes I show them to gross them out and they can't even tell, they do however think that the scar behind my ear is cool. If it is a procedure that is needed why worry about what your ear canal of all things will look like afterwards? YOU can't even see it by looking in the mirror normally. Worry about the important things like hearing your loved ones say 'I love you' or your favorite song, living, you know the things that really matter. Those are just my thoughts on the subject, Mancie Beck __________________________________________________ - We Remember 9-11: A tribute to the more than 3,000 lives lost http://dir.remember./tribute
Guest guest
, I don't blame you for thinking that a "meatoplasty" would cause your ear to be "unattractive"... If I had seen that picture in that link prior to my surgery, I think I would have "flipped".... Lucky for me I went in to surgery in total ignorance. I only found this group afterward... I was like a lamb going to the "slaughter" so to speak... My surgeon told me what he was going to do... but it was a little overwhelming at the time, and figured he knew what he was doing. And he did... I don't think that arguing about CWU and CWD and Meatoplasty prior to surgery would have mattered much... Most surgeons will only do what is needed. CWU is the preferred method, but sometimes it is not the right procedure for some patients. Anyway, I think CWD is usually accompanied by meatoplasty! My ear looks almost the same as before. I didn't even know I had a meatoplasty till I read my OR report... I even posted questions about what meatoplasty is. I think in most cases it is barely noticeable, and is probably a small compromise for the increased security it gives. The only problem I have with the meatoplasty is knowing that there is an opening into my middle ear area, and I have to always be cautious about water. I'd like to someday have the opening closed if my ear stays clean and dry and no evidence of c-toma is ever found. I'm didn't mean to cause offense. In my case the procedure widen the canal wasn't necessary, but my old doctor wanted to do it anyway. In this position I had to make a decision based on the information I had and this was long before I found this board. Based upon my interpretation of his description of what my ear would look like I decided not to have the procedure. The in/out procedure to widen the canal would have only made it easier to clean for him. After that I didn't even go to an ear doctor for 6 years. Only recently have I gone back to a new doctor.Again if I gave offense I apologize. I perhaps was just being a little too honest and not giving thought to those who might have had the procedure. Guest guest
Hi , You didn't offend anyone. Everyone's experience is different and different docs like to do different things. As long as you are doing ok now, that is what is important. Michele Let me apologize if I offended anyone who has had CWD procedure. I'm didn't mean to cause offense. Guest guest
By the way, her ENT said one of the big benefits of a CWD is a returning Cholesteatoma will show up easier on a CT-Scan. But it all appears so open now, seems like I can almost see her BRAIN! Donna DeBoer

Guest guest
In my last surgery I went 2hrs over but it was because I struggled waking up and was so sick from the anesthesia they kept me in recovery till I was more alert. Hope everything went well today. Guest guest
My first surgery went 7 hrs over but I chalk that up to my surgeon 17yrs ago who wasn't very knowledgeable with ctoma. He is now but after my surgery he said that I was his first ctoma patient! At 15 you don't want to hear things like that. What type of surgeries is she having? Are they all re-growths?
