I have a BTE aid that has a very thin tube that goes into my canal with

a soft plastic anchor that is meant to allow air flow. I've been pretty

pleased with it so far - it's way more powerful than an in-the-ear or in

the canal device. Also, kids wear so much electronic garbage on their

heads these days that your son would probably just fit right in. Most

people don't even realize what mine is. My only concern would be that

certain dimwitted authority figures might mistake it for an

entertainment device.

Hi, my daughter is in pre-school and has good hearing in her right ear and almost none in her left ear. Her preschool set up a system in which the teacher wears a mic cliped to her shirt and a small speaker is set on her desk and katy does very well with that. It is transportable so it was even taken on a feild trip with her. We get it with a 45 day free trial and then if we like it (which we do so far) then the school system will purchase it so that they can use it with other kids after she no longer needs it which will hopefully be in Jan after 2nd surgery. Just another option to look into.

Do any of you have experience with using an FM system in theclassroom. I am interested in the one where there are speakers in theroom so that the child is not singled out. My son is in 3rd grade andwe have had 2 attempts at reconstruction that have failed. Hishearing in his right ear is good and the Dr thought a hearing aidwould cause infection due to a hole in his eardrum in the bad ear. Ithought the FM system would help. I would have to buy it due to thefact he attends a private school. Any information would be appreciated.Thank you,

Thank you so much for that information. Do you happen to know the brand of FM system you are using?

My 10 yr old son also uses a portable FM system. He hasn't had it very

long but so far he is doing very well with it. He carries it from

class to class (5th grade). The state will pay for it if your Dr

orders it & the school evaluates him & approves him for special

need.My son is in regular classes but has an IEP because of

significant hearing loss.

Hi ,

I taught music in 2 private Christian schools and they both had devices for hearing impaired children. The first school was chartered so state monies were made available to them; however, the second school was not and I know they often applied for grants. Sorry I can not be of more help, but maybe this will be a starting point for you. I can also tell you that when there is a need God's people enjoy rising to the ocassion. Schedule an appointment to speak to the head of your school and to the pastor of your local church. With a loving and resourceful mom like you, your son will thrive!

We attend a private Catholic school that has no money for extras. We have to have fund raisers for everything. So I plan on having to pay for it!

Oh well the good and bad about private schools. In Florida or at least in my district, the public schools are not the best!

Re: FM Systems in the classroom

No I don't, I'm sorry. It was ordered by the school. It took foreverto get in though--about 8 wks. If I had the money I would have boughtone myself that he could use at church as well. I just thought I'dmention that the school is responsible for getting one is he'sapproved. They are quite expensive I think.> >> > Do any of you have experience with using an FM system in the> > classroom. I'm a teacher of Deaf in a public school (in addition to a mom to a

son with cholesteatoma) so I've had some experience with these. If

your child has an IEP, you can request that a soundfield system be

added as an accomodation. If your son does not, you can request it

as part of a 504 plan for physical accomodations (which is under the

Americans with Disabilities Act). I honestly don't know how funding

works with a private school, but it is certainly worth looking into.

I love the Lightspeed soundfield systems. They have a few options,

including one whose speaker looks like a poster of the solar system

(so it's pretty discreet). There are portable ones too, that would

provide similar benefit. The system uses infrared signal instead of

FM, so there is less chance for interference with a competing

signal. My students benefit from these systems, and the teachers

love them. Once ordered, they arrive within a few days. You should

be able to do a web search of Lightspeed sound field systems to find

the website.

Good luck!

My son ( 8 yo) had a hearing aide for his right ear from the

cholesteatoma & also used an FM System in the classroom & had preferential

seating for all his classes. I don’t want to get mushy but honestly it’s

a miracle; my sons hearing has improved after three surgeries & came back

to be as normal as the left ear & better than ever. We recently

discontinued the hearing aide over the summer & than the FM system also

this year. It can happen (audiologist & ent said it was not expected). The

fm system was great & the teacher wore the microphone & he had the fm

system on his desk. As the other write said you can have them evaluated, get an

IEP & or a 504 plan for disabilities & the school will pay. We are in

NJ.

Eve,

That is great news. How many surgeries did he need to get his hearing back?

We seen to have not had any reoccurrence, but have had the last 3 surgeries with no luck at reconstruction. I am torn about doing another to attempt reconstruction. The Dr now feels maybe the eardrum that still has a very small hole in it and it mostly a graft may be sitting at an odd angle and therefore not conducting sound and may need the entire thing replaced. My son really does not want any more surgery and says he is happy with his hearing. I would like to give him a break anyway since the last one was 3 1/2 months ago. I do not want to put him through more if they are not sure it will work so I want to optimize his hearing for now. I am having him tested in the public school soon and will get a 504 plan if needed. I think my private school will do their best to accommodate him but I feel badly asking them to pay for an FM knowing they struggle to get other things. I am OK with paying $1,000 If it will benefit him in school.

Are you saying the FM system was a miracle? Would you recommend the desk top or the one with speakers around the room?

You know, I hadn't really given this much thought, but Chloe's repair has been delayed again, and since we're talking hearing aids now, maybe we should also consider this.

Nick is not really a candidate for hearing aids due to the hole in his ear drum it could cause infection. We send him to a private school that can not afford extras and installed it yesterday so that he would not know it was for him (although he is no dummy). It was very easy to install, only one speaker the size of a calendar that hangs on the wall from a bracket, and a small lanyard that hangs on the teachers neck. It cuts out all of the background noise. I tried it in an empty class and it sounds natural. I found out yesterday that my best friend's 1st graders teacher uses one and he loves it. It benefits all kids.

I spoke to the audiologist with the company and she said it was appropriate for kids with unilateral hearing loss.

I have only heard good things about it, so to me, $800.00 is worth every penny. Your school may even have them to give you if they are public, or if private, they may consider buying one for you. Stress the fact that it helps teacher fatigue and also benefits all students. Lots of studies have been done to prove this.

Let me know if you need any more information.

My son is in 3rd grade & had

success using a totable fm system. When he had an IEP for receiving speech the school

provided it to him & now he is covered (as the other mom said) under the 504

plan & a “reasonable accommodation”. Put your formal request in

writing & also from an audiologist. Our Audiologist suggested the Phonic Ear

soundfield system. The one he used in class was worn like a necklace by the teacher

& was small battery operated amplifier/speaker on his desk. He could take it

class to class but does not. Only uses it in his home room class & not to specials

such as Art, etc.

Another option is to get a loaner from your medical provider. We

recently got on a wait list with Seattle's Children's Hospital. I'm

not sure how long the wait is. Mainly I want to get a chance to try

one out before our school system has to commit to buying one for us

to use. My daughter is in 1st grade with Cholesteatomas in both ears.

Does your daughter have a hearing aid? or will she use the FM system by itself?

I know that somehow you can connect an FM system to a hearing aid, but I don't know how it works.

My son is also in 1st grade and just recently got a hearing aide. We are just starting with it to see how he does. I don't know if he'll need an FM system or not.

Good luck to your daughter with it.Jan 3, 2009 05:21:55 AM, cholesteatoma wrote:

I'm not sure what it will look like. I envision it being something the
