Hi,

I have to reply to you because my son has the same problem as you as far as the prosthetic not working and a persistent hole in his ear drum. I do not want to put him thru more surgery as no one knows what is causing the hole and why reconstruction does not work after 2 attempts.

I recently have started taking him to a chiropractor. She says his spine is out of alignment in the area that effects his ears. Not sure it this is true or not but it does make sense and worth a try. My husband is not comfortable with the idea of having a 9 year old adjusted, but the Chiropractor is highly recommended and I figure football is more dangerous.

What type of a superspecialist is your Dr. talking about?

curing infections/preventing recurrant Ctoma

Hi Ctoma group. Glad to find you. I've had 2 removal surgeries with the last one also receiving prosthetic bones. My hearing is not restored. I now have a hole that will not heal & the prosthetic is coming thru it. My ENT said I can go to a "super-specialist" if I want to have the hole closed, otherwise just to leave the hole... which offers drainage ability, like with tubes... but without the plastic. Doc observed the hole and did a recheck 6 weeks later. it's not healing and in fact, getting worse. He suggested to just watch it and said to come back in a year. A YEAR???!!!!???!!! I'm not comfortable with leaving it for a year. Also, it's unsettling bc my ENT said that he was "freaked out" during my 2nd surgery, bc he was able to see a lot more damage done by the Ctoma, that he could not see in the first surgery due to swelling. I've learned that this is due to chronic life-long infections (as indicated by amount of scarring), so I've now turned to learning about prevention. I have found that foods I've always eaten are causing the infections. I can feel a bunch of fluid within hours after eating chicken, eggs, turkey and milk. (I've always had hearing loss, never felt pain or infections until after my surgeries.) Wondering if anyone else in this group is taking a natural path to healing this problem.WHAT HAVE YOU TRIED AND WHAT ARE YOUR RESULTS??? Currently, I have been taking Exsula "Premium" superfood for my multi-vit, Exsula "Strata-Flora" for my probiotic and also Exsula "EllagiPlex" to stop abnormal cell production. Since taking these once daily, I have had no abnormal cell accumulation (per my ENT who viewed thru the hole in my ear). A friend has also encouraged me to use 35% food grade H2O2 (her family, with school-age kids, hasn't been sick once in the 3 years they've used it)... so I began that today as well.anxious to hear from anyone. thanks

We've had Chloe adjusted several times a week for the last three years. It has been a huge help for her... however, it hasn't really changed the outcome of the prostheses (She 's going for her fourth attempt in a week) or the tendency of her eardrum to perforate.

There is no special herb or little pill you can take to prevent a c-toma from forming or coming back. All you can do is to keep your ear as dry as possible and hope water does not get into the inner ear. It is all in the hands of fate if it forms or not, it does then your one of the unlucky ones...

Sorry for the delayed reply. Been a busy weekend, HOWEVER... today, out of the blue, I am able to hear!!!!! I don't know why, all of a sudden, but it's happened! Even my ENT was not sure why I could not hear after the prosthetics were put into place. Possibly the hole in my ear has healed??? I will not know until I can get back in to have a check up. BUT, I do firmly believe in natural healthy living and I know that with my change in eating habits, I have had many positive changes in how I feel (aches, pains, depression, etc.) Not just for myself, but for my friends who've lept too. I know we all have different views, beliefs, theories, etc, but if what I am doing is possibly helping, it's worth sharing! Thanks for the input on the

chiro. I have not been in a long time... felt the guy was a bit of a quack. But I have been referred to a TCM Dr. who I am intrigued to explore a visit with.

To recap what I have done:

**From the advise of a nutritionist, I've gone on an elimination diet and have reintroduced foods that are known to cause ear infections (poultry, dairy, gluten, corn ...and "nightshade vegetables" were in that mix somewhere too, but that may have been within the subject of eating foods that are suitable for my blood type... can't remember for sure.) Anyway, I was able to notice changes when I brought back certain foods, so I've played with that several times, getting the same results each time. I am now convinced that those items should be omitted from my diet. EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT, so experiment for yourself and pay attention to how your body (not just your ear) reacts. **I have begun consuming superfoods (a multi, a probiotic and a specific formula to assist my cells)

**Last saturday, I began taking 35% food grade H2O2 twice a day. This is HIGHLY controvertial and I do not recommend an uneducated person to try it. I have waivered on trying it for nearly 3 years and have finally decided to try it bc of the personal results relayed to me by a person I know and trust.

**Additionally, due to Seasonal Affective Disorder, I also resumed using my light therapy box & because I know it helps me with S.A.D., I also added a high dose B-Complex & Magnesium back into my routine. Possibly the B-Complex & Magnesium have helped.

Obviously, I am working to improve my overall health, so I have things in play for reasons other than just the Ctoma... but... if it helps anyone else, GREAT!

I know there is no special herb or pill to take, and really, that is not what I'm after. I am in pursuit of healthier living (not a "legalistic" version) and if by improving my health, I can stop this from recurring, then that is a beautiful thing. I have come across a lot of nut-jobs (my opinion) and am pretty skeptical in general, but honestly, I have figured out a lot about paying attention to my body, using natural approaches and I have experienced results to draw from. My biggest reward was becomming migraine-free after battling them almost daily for 20 years. I am by far not an extremist in any manner. I think having a good balance is best. Thus, I encourage my children (ages 6-12) to make good food choices, but I don't deny them the opportunity to have what they want, within reason. We teach our kids by example. Cause and Effect is a good teaching tool too! :) My health is in

my hands, not fate. Just as we are given "free will" to choose or deny Him, God has given us the tools to build up as well as tear down our bodies. The choice is ours.

As for a "super specialist", I am not sure. I did not go that route. My ENT indicated that this type of Dr. is more knowlegeable / skilled with cases that might be too complicated for an ENT specialist. I don't know what sort of label this type of Dr. would have listed after his/her name. What I do know is that my ENT was unaware of the effects foods have on the ears. Clearly, a "conventional" approach, not a well rounded one. Conventional medicine is not bad, it's just where many people decide to stop. We can cut our tumors out all we want to, but really... why is the tumor happening in the first place? Sadly, not enough people think that far, or do anything about it. It takes will and effort.

The " super-specialist " that you are probably referring to would be

someone trained in otology and neurotology. An otologist specializes in

care for the ear while a neurotologist specializes in nerves that pass

through the ear. The only treatment that I'm aware of for cholesteatoma

is surgical removal. I'd caution you that little is known about

positive or negative effects of nutritional remedies and any observed

consequences may only be coincidence.

My doctor is both an otologist and a neurotologist. I personally

wouldn't have anyone less skilled taking care of my ears at this point.

So far things are going well, but I'm certainly committed to having my

regular check-ups.
