Guest guest
Hi everybody, My surgery will be next Wednesday on the 16th and I had my pre-op ENT visit yesterday. I signed my surgery consent form and found out that I have a ruptured ear drum, something that I had not been told all this time for some reason. So the procedure will be " tympanoplasty with mastoidectomy revision " My ENT finally told me that there maybe a another cholesteatoma. I have been given tons of meds in preparation for the surgery and I wanted to check in with everybody to see if your procedure was similar. I was put on more antibiotics - augmentin 875 mg and prednisolone for 5 days. since I had developed a nasty fungus infection my mouth and throat due to antibiotic overuse, I was also given Nystatin ..it's a syrup and usually you spit it out after rinsing your mouth. But they added dexamthasone and antihistamines in the syrup adn now I have to swallow it.si Are these normal meds that are perscribed before ear surgery? I just started yesterday and for the first time in months I don't have a stiff'painful neck, also less brainfog . I'm assuming it's the steroids. thanks Elke
Guest guest
Elke, Sounds like your ENT just wants to make sure your ear is dry and no infection when he/she goes in there. I have anitibitotics and steroids before c-toma surgery. Guest guest
-- HI, the antibiotics are so you dont have any infection present during your surgery and the steriod-Prednesolone is to calm any inflamation down before hand also. The Nystatin mixed with the other meds is known at s Magic Potion and that is a very common medication around here. Basically you have thrush in your mouth from the antibiotics you have been taken and this will help with that. It is not uncommon for doctors to recommend that patients swallow this solution since you might have this fungus all the way down to your stomach. And yes you are correct that the steriods are what is making your neck feel better. They are great for inflamation. The Augmention wouldnt have anything to do with " lessening your brain fog " nor would the Nystatin. Good luck with your surgery!!!!
