Hi, Angie!

First and foremost, do not accept legal advice from school officials...obviously, they will be biased for the school and against the child. I wish I could give you a straight answer on the No Child Left Behind thing they claimed, but I really don't know. I haven't gotten to reading that law yet -- I'm still reading IDEA 2004. But, here's a website that might help you: http://www.wrightslaw.com/nclb/index.htm. It tells you everything you ever wanted to know about No Child Left Behind but were afraid to ask! You could always ask them to write down for you exactly where in the No Child Left Behind law this claim is written. Then, you might be able to look it up on the site I referenced by that information.

This is just my guess, but I would think that if his IEP states he's reading at a certain level and able to do math at a certain level, then that's where they'd have to start -- so make sure that's written on the IEP. However, they might be able to claim that if you didn't sign the IEP authorizing them to implement it (which, if you signed the Attendance Only section, they could easily claim that...and they'd probably be correct), then they don't have to follow it. If that's the case, call another IEP meeting as fast as possible, and bring with you a written list of everything in the IEP that you disagree with, and what you would like to see them do instead. Then, you could possibly sign the section that says you give consent to initiate special ed and related services as stated in the IEP except for: then write "see attached page" in the space there. If you completely disagree with everything written in the IEP, you could always check that you do not give permission, and then they have to give you Prior Written Notice -- it says so right on the form. But, keep in mind, until that meeting happens, they don't have to implement anything in the IEP, which could be really bad for your child. If it were me, I would probably take the draft of the IEP you have, cross out and rewrite to your liking, hold an IEP meeting and show them the changes. Say you will sign off on what you brought. See what they say. That's just what I would do. As I always say, I'm not a lawyer -- don't even play one on TV! So I can only tell you what I would do, not give any legal advice.

Good luck and keep us posted.

By the way, my favorite article on helping folks understand Autism/Asperger's is

http://www.autismspectrum.net/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=248. It's called "Ten Things Every Child with Autism Wishes You Knew."

Hi, Angie! I'm sorry to hear you are not well enough to work. I

hope you are getting better!! I think it's great that your son's

teachers want to meet you and get to know your son better. That they

are the ones who asked for the meeting shows that they are looking

for ways to help your son. Since I don't personally know your son, I

really can't give you websites that would describe him, but here are

some suggestions. You could read them and see if they are useful

websites for you:

CHADD is an organization for those affected by ADHD. Their website

is: http://www.chadd.org

They have a link to myths about ADHD:

http://www.help4adhd.org/en/about/myths

http://www.aspergers.com/aspcomor.htm - this page has a paragraph on

asperger's and ADHD

http://home.att.net/%7Ecoultervideo/newteach.htm - this page talks to

teachers about how to teach someone with Asperger's

http://info.med.yale.edu/chldstdy/autism/astreatments.html - this

article is very long, but covers a lot of details, about Asperger's.

http://www.nasponline.org/publications/cq313asperger_ss.html - this

article would be good for you to read and be familiar with in case

the teachers later come to you asking you how to help your son

understand the social aspect of school. It discusses social stories,

comic strip conversations, and social autopsies, etc.

I have in the past found good resources on bipolar disorder, but I

don't have them at my fingertips. Let me look around and email you

later on that.

What I have done in the past is written up a page with my son's

strengths, weaknesses, and challenges as a way of introduction to new

teachers. I took the symptoms of autism and wrote up a sentence or

two of how that symptom looks in my son. I wanted the teacher to not

confuse my son's disability with disobedience/uncooperation.

Angie, I wish you the best at your meeting with your son's teachers!
