Pylori infection. It taught this old dog some new tricks. My symptoms were a strong burning sensation in my stomach that felt like being very hungry and not having eaten anything for days. Constant pain whether I ate something or not. Milk and ice cream felt so good in my stomach but would only feel better for a few minutes. I found myself getting up a couple of times at night to eat saltines or eat tums to keep my stomach from hurting. D
Guest guest
Hi Carol, I am currently being treated for it. My symptoms were quite severe pain in my stomach. At times it would feel like an elephant was standing high on my abdomen just under the ribs. Then several times I had a burning in my stomach, it would come and go. Right where the ribs meet (xiphoid process or something like that) was very tender for a long time. The treatment seems to be working, but it is not very fun!! I have been on it for 8 days now, 22 left to go. Talk with Dr R. Hope you're feeling better. Guest guest
, Are you saying that you are going to take meds for 30 days? I too am being treated for h. pylori but my prescription is only for 14 days. My symptom is a constant gnawing, burning sensation in the area just above my navel all the way up to my breastbone. My gastro doctor tested me and said I do not have hp but Dana said the test result was a " false negative " and called in the prescription for a Prevpak for me. I am so desparate I will try anything in the hope to get some relief but I am starting to wonder if so many of us truly do have this condition or is it something awry that is caused by our surgery. I just don't understand and it seems too many of us have are having this trouble. Bankie
Guest guest
My question is for the people having this hp or whatever it is. How long ago did you have your surgery? Also, I'm 5 months out 3/25/02 and I'm starting to lose a little hair. I seem to remember someone mentioning this before my surgery. Anyone else losing hair? How many did you lose? I think I have been very lucky. I have had no pain and no discomfort ( except for a couple of times I ate too fast). Guest guest
Kathy, I am 7 months out and am just having symptoms of h.pylori. It is not fun but it is only temporary!!!! Yes- I lost some hair but it seems to have stopped now. For me it was more a thinning of my hair and I have ALOT of hair on my head - so it hasn't caused any problems for me. I just need to resolve this H pylori and - this is really my first major problem. Guest guest
I don't really think that many out of 1400+ patients have had this bacteria. Yeah, I have mine for 30 days. Probably because I am allergic to penicillin which is the main killer of the bacteria. So now I have to take tetracycline and flagyl instead of the prevpak. Hopefully, it will do the trick. One of the theories of how we contract H Pylori is from ingesting contaminated feces, CERTAINLY NOT ON PURPOSE!!!!!!! Now, I work in a bank doing data processing. We process work for six states, plus I work with several women that just won't wash their hands after using the restroom, for what ever reason!! It is impossible to be germ free, no matter how hard I try, the uncleanly people touch everything and we can't walk around in a bubble. Theory again is once you have had H Pylori, your system may develop a weakness towards it, so you are suposed to pay close attention to your body and what it is telling you. Dr R says he's going to do a survey on us regarding the H Pylori, so watch for that to come. My Dad and my Aunt that have never had the MGB or any type of WLS have both had H Pylori years ago. I don't really think it is related to the MGB, perhaps all the changes in our system makes us more vulnerable, I don't really know. I've rambled long enough Re: H Pylori??? > , > Are you saying that you are going to take meds for 30 days? I too am being > treated for h. pylori but my prescription is only for 14 days. Guest guest
Kathy, i am 18 months postop with HP and I lost a ton of hair. I still have to take zinc sulfate and biotin everyday or I start shedding again. Re: H Pylori??? > My question is for the people having this hp or whatever it is. Guest guest
I am almost 2 years postop and I still lose a few hairs but I think that is normal daily hair loss. One of the best things I did for my hair is use a good conditioner DAILY - which is something I had never done before because I have oily hair and had never found one that I didn't weigh my hair down. I use Nexus Keraphix every day and it has made a world of difference in my hair. It has more body and feels thicker - even if it isn't. It is in the best condition according to my hair dresser than it has ever been. in GA Re: H Pylori??? Kathy, i am 18 months postop with HP and I lost a ton of hair. Guest guest
Kathy- I started losing hair at 4 months and didn't stop until the 10th month which is pretty much the norm. I had thin hair to begin with and I lost a lot of hair! I was getting ready to check into getting a wig when it stopped. But it has come back better than ever. I think all the vitamins help, and I do make sure I get the zinc and biotin in every day. Some people say it is related to protein intake. Guest guest
Carol, What you are describing is pretty close to my symptoms as well.... in the beginning. Then the heartburn turned to constant burning. Eating anything that was spicy, even plain pepper would increase the burning. Sometime the belching would cause me to spit up mouth full of bile as well. Many people after a prolonged bout have aspirated bile during their sleep and developed pneumonia. I'm thinking that even though a patient my not YET have a positive test with any of these symptoms, they are in the beginning stages. Given time they will eventually get a positive test. I went through two 14 day treatments. The first treatment I felt much, much better. But, within two weeks started having symptoms again, so I did a second round. Now am fine. It took me two days the first time to feel it was working..... Hugs, LyndaV Cushing, Ok 296/168 H Pylori??? Ok my MGB family, Normally, I would not discuss this even with my husband but of course - since we are a kind of family. I am looking for some input from my MGB family. What kind of s/s did you see with H. pylori infection? I am experiencing nausea and some vomiting, increased gas and now belching, abdominal bloating and heartburn. I talked to Dana and she says - they are going to treat me for H.Pylori. I am assuming that it will take about 48-72 hours to feel better? Thanks! Guest guest
Hi Bankie, Although my initial doses of meds for HP were for only 14 days I had three refills and wound up taking an additional 14 days. I had symptoms for several months before I finally approached DrR about my symptoms. He wasn't my surgeon when I had surgery, so needed to sound him out about his willingness to take me on as a patient. Your symptoms sound very, VERY close to what I felt. I think because our stomachs are so much smaller it is easier for the bacteria to get a foot hold in our systems. And it makes sense to me that if we are in the beginning stages our blood levels that are tested for the presence of the bacteria may at first just not register when we get those negative results with the symptoms we are having. The results of my blood tests where very much positive. I would bet if you waited a while and had the test redone, yours would come back positive as well. You trusted DrR enough to stab you 5 or 6 times and rearrange your insides! Trust him enough now to advise you on how to care for your tummy post op! He has a lot of time, and much of his life for that matter invested in this whole thing, to mislead us now would only lead to dystroy everything he has built to this point. Why would he do that? Hugs, LyndaV 296/168 > , > Are you saying that you are going to take meds for 30 days? I too am being > treated for h. pylori but my prescription is only for 14 days. Guest guest
I took H. Pylori treatment for 2 weeks because of a vague aching/burning in the left side of my back. My H. Pylori blood test was negative. But I trusted Dr. R and took the treatment, and the symptoms went completely away for about 3 months. Slowly the symptoms began to come back... so I'm back on the treatment for a full month this time. I have the disadvantage of being allergic to penicillin, which usually makes it more difficult to kill the bacteria. After talking with Dr. R, my understanding is that he believes the sensitivity of the blood test for H. Pylori may not be all that great, and so he believes in treating symptomatically, regardless of test results. Apparantly, this philosophy is proving to be successful because so many people have had a resolution of their symptoms after treatment for H. Pylori, even when the test was negative. I'd like to offer another thought on this as well. H. Pylori may not be the only bacteria that causes ulcers. There may be other strains or similar bacteria which wouldn't show up on a standard H. Pylori test, which will cause the same symptoms. It was not so many years ago that we didn't even know a bacteria could cause ulcers at all... and the doctor who discovered the truth was initially disbelieved and ridiculed by the medical community. Finally there was enough strong research to establish that a bacteria could cause ulcers, and that killing the bacteria was the best treatment for the symptoms. Who's to say H. Pylori is the only bug out there causing such symptoms? It's just the only one we know about... yet. Just my .02 (KY)
