Guest guest
I'm so glad to see these posts coming through on a regular basis now. When can I expect a job application for the next Nacho Man? The request for that Very Special Episode of " The Moment of Truth: When Midgets Lie " ? This list gets their collective panties in a wad over a 21 year old girl who is attempting to ask questions for a class, yet this doesn't bother anyone? may not have had the finesse that was so desired by some members of the list, but she at least gave us her name and other information! Which " Major Cable Television Network " ? What is the name of this " award-winning documentary series " ? Who is this person asking? Why is this person (gender unknown) seeking people with dwarfism? And if this unnamed person is trying to tell a Kleenex- moment story, why ask for a photo to be included with the first email that includes " details about yourself " ? Are only the pretty dwarf mommies worthy of their moment in reality heaven? This is allowed to get through with nary a word but posts where a member is attempting to give away shoes gets a " moderators note? " Are clothes swaps so dodgy they need to be monitored closely? Guest guest
once again, it's a given that if the mods approve a note [despite a poll that so far has 80% willing to have shows approved], they're wrong. if we didn't approve it and someone posted it via 3rd party posting, we'd be wrong. if someone heard about it in the media, and learned that it had asked to be posted but we had rejected it, we'd be wrong. we sincerely apologise for all the things we've done wrong in the past, currently and in the future. we are attempting to give some freedom of choice here by list members, but that's probably wrong too. Guest guest
I would like to also add to what Whims says, that in a group as large as this, there is always a very low response when polls take place. Guest guest
Okay, the choices that have been made in the past, were not " WRONG " , they may have been the right thing at the time. Things change and we make different choices. It's great to make changes and try new things to see what works and what doesn't. You won't know unless you try, and why would that be wrong? I voted against having posts regarding advertising acting and show requests because there is another list that is dessignated for that. However, the majority voted for it, then I am willing to accept that. It's great to get people's opinions. I would encourage the moderators to posts these polls at least once a year to see if there is a fluxulation of requests and opinions. Again, there isn't a wrong choice. Trial and error. Keep trying new things and sometimes it's not the " right time " for an idea, but it could work out later on. Guest guest
I have a poll question I like to suggest. In 2000, there was an avg. of 556 messages per month. In 2008, the avg. is an amazing 170 messages per month. What is a major cause for this 70% decline?? A. Censorship B.  Global Warming C. Technology D. Harry Potter E. The TV show " Lost " F. All of the above After heavily thinking this over, I think its F.  Re: Re: seeking guests for TV show I would like to also add to what Whims says, that in a group as large as this, there is always a very low response when polls take place. Guest guest
craig, oddly enough, we as moderators do try to moderate language that doesnt conform to the guidelines for our rating. and for moderating topics that are too personal for one's beliefs? whose beliefs would that be? mine? yours? john doe's? and who decides that they are too personal? we have tried to accomodate web sites and businesses. but do we allow one type of business, owned and operated by an LP, but not allow another business, also owned by an LP? isn't THAT censorship? when a website is posted, we allow it so that the information gets out. when it is repeated over and over again, we add it to the links on the Dwarfism web site so that information can be accessed by list members. i'm sorry you consider that not good enough for you. all 50 of us [me and Adelaide] will be more than happy to loosen the reins of our extreme censorship. if the occasional adult site, ads for " midget wrestling " , and a plethora of research students come thru, then oh well! the job description doesn't include putting up with insults and harassment for trying to keep this a G rated group, without any bennnies, pay or vacation. get yourself another whipping boy. advertise on Google. the other 48 mods are taking a break. Guest guest
I have a theory about these lists and it goes like this: Overall 10% of those who appear as members actually continue to read it after their initial sign-up Leaving us at 298 And of those, only 10% actively participate Leaving us at 29 So, I'm not surprised at the turnouts we usually get. Guest guest
when a website is posted, we allow it so that the information gets out. when it is repeated over and over again, we add it to the links on the Dwarfism web site so that information can be accessed by list members. i'm sorry you consider that not good enough for you.  - Whims - last time I checked my site isn't on the dwarfism website. The only site of mine that is posted is my personal site from 1999. Most of those links are outdated, so if there's some other dwarfism website that you're referring to....please let me know. we have tried to accomodate web sites and businesses. but do we allow one type of business, owned and operated by an LP, but not allow another business, also owned by an LP? isn't THAT censorship? When?? Was this before I became a member of this list a few years back?? Well...you're right! The listserve did post personal websites of its members of the community back then and also businesses. I haven't seen anything like that since. When I first developed my site, I kept getting threats from the moderators saying that if I posted again, I would be suspended. I'll admit, a posting of mine was let through recently but was it just a miss? or maybe you guys are trying to change. get yourself another whipping boy. advertise on Google. the other 48 mods are taking a break. - Well...I keep that job for my wife. I love the sarcasm! Advertising a community lp website on google is like fishing in a lake without bait.     Re: Re: seeking guests for TV show I would like to also add to what Whims says, that in a group as large as this, there is always a very low response when polls take place. These polls being conducted at present, are asking about changes you may or may not want to have regarding which types of messages should be allowed. The majority of votes in each poll will determine the changes to be made...or not to be made. It's up to each of you to vote...and it all is anonymous. Not even we moderators know who votes. So hopefully, more will take the time to vote between now and when the poll closes this Friday...at which time we will ALL be notified of the results concerning each item voted on. Guest guest
Think about how the Internet has changed since this list was migrated to ; how many more options we have to communicate within the community. Whereas back then if you wanted to see what others were up to you or catch up on what events are going on you: A. read their website (if they had one) B. went to the online chat group which Casey founded C. read the discussion list Now you can check out MySpace, Facebook and a bunch of other sites (such as blogs) where we have information and opinions posted. I'm surprised that LPA doesn't have an 'official' Facebook site; or does it? There are also more dwarfism centered lists: AdultLP - Founded: Jan 22, 2002 some districts, such as D1 have their own - Founded: Oct 31, 2003 Also, some lives have changed and people are at a different stage and may not have the time to fit in discussion list readings. I can think of quite a few individuals we no longer see posts from. Add to that the fact that we're processing a lot more information in general, so some may not be dedicating as much time to the lists. All in all, as Bob Dylan said 20 years ago " The Times They Are A-Changin' " > > I have a poll question I like to suggest. > > In 2000, there was an avg. of 556 messages per month. I imagine they are not like what they used to be initially too:D. Has anyone 'experienced' the price of a hot dog and a drink at any of our pro league ballparks today?! >I have a theory about these lists and it goes like this: Overall 10% of those who appear as members actually continue to read it after their initial sign-up Leaving us at 298 And of those, only 10% actively participate Leaving us at 29 So, I'm not surprised at the turnouts we usually get. It's within my theory's ballpark.
Guest guest
Craig -- Being that you are not, and never have been a moderator of this group, you don't know what you are talking about in any of your half dozen or so posts today. You have no idea what sort of garbage they get sent privately. You have no idea how hard they work at trying to make this place accessible all the while keeping the " I've always wanted to meet a midget of my own! " posts off. Is that censorship or is that giving us a place as a community where we don't have to deal with the garbage we deal with on a daily basis? You have been allowed a lot of freedom in the email bombings of your site. Everytime you have changed one pixel on it, you announced it and the posts went through. You whine that Whims & Adelaide have not included it in the list of dwarfism sites -- have you every written them to ask to be included? Or was it just easier to throw an accusation? Guest guest
I think the answer is pretty obvious (and not listed below). In 2000, there were less internet resources for people with dwarfism, including email lists. This was the only game in town. Now we have Adult LPs, Parents of Little People, the Dwarfs for Christ list, the chronic pain list, the " official " (not really) LPA online list, etc. Throw in Myspace, Facebook, and Litttle.com, and I'm surprised we only have a 2/3 drop in the number of posts. Than I'm guilty. Finally, on my way home this evening from my sporting event I was thinking about this listserve. There is no sense of community here. The moderators are trying so hard to improve things but you're leaving out the important thing....sense of togetherness. I've noticed in the past when a member would post something good that has happened to them, there's no " way to go " , " congrats " , or follow up discussion about their achievement. I think the person would feel good knowing that this community is publicly commending them. For example, Kurt posts a YouTube video of him playing drums, only 1 person mentioned it. Grady, works hard to provide these news articles about lps....no one ever says thank you or talks about the article. Faye has a talent of taking pictures and writing blogs, but she can't really mention them because it's on myspace. I'm not saying moderators aren't needed for this listserve...of course they're necessary but for the right reasons. I would go on and on, but I don't want to open up another can of worms. I'm also tired. Night! Guest guest
craig, sorry that you didn't see the several posts that requested members send us their links, so that we could add them to the file of links we have on the site. Now that you've so kindly brought it to our attention that some of those links are outdated, we'll be glad to graze thru them again and delete ones that are dead. I'm not sure how you are navigating the site. I click on the left hand side, click FILES, and there are " other dwarfism groups " listed, as well as " businesses to serve you " and the " LPA job list " that we received from Fred Short. If you click on the left hand side on LINKS, we've put up other enterprises that have asked to be listed. It took me 2 clicks, but you may well have some hand-eye coordination problem I'm completely unaware of. From the tone of your letter, apparently you are also unsure of who exactly the moderators of Dwarfism are. Once again I'll clarify that. I, Whims, am a moderator. And owner [for all that will get me-- a buck and owner status and I can get coffee at mickey d's] Adelaide [bASHUM] is my co-moderator. She also owns the LPs Chronic Pain group. Between the 2 of us we field inappropriate posts, requests for links, weed out dead links, approve messages, and try to improve the site between work, family, doctors and daily responsibilities. Rose is the owner of adultLPs. She retired from Dwarfism quite some time ago due to other pressing needs. Dan Kennedy and Bill Bradford also retired from their positions for family, job and health issues that demanded thir attention. So, for all the appearance of a busy little workshop here to instantly approve messages and meet the needs of the list, there are 2 of us. Period. We have had a couple of other people [kelly and david] who were unable to coordinate the demands of the list and the demands of daily life. Perhaps with the blossoming of other dwrfism related groups, you have confused the number of mods that are available on each list.
