Guest guest
Hello, I had my surgery a few days before both of you (12th). I am just now beginning to feel like I am getting better. This is my third ear surgery. Important to keep the ear area dry and take your pain medication. After my last surgery it took 6 months for my taste buds to return. Hang in there. Guest guest
Hi - I had my third ear surgery on December 20th. My first two were in the late 80's when I was 14 and 15. This can be a scary post op experience because we aren't familiar with the normal side effects. I took my large bandage off my head about 24 hours after I got home and inside the plastic cup must have been a pound of BLOODY bandages. I was all "ahhh!" For the first two weeks or so my ear was swollen off my head about twice as far as my other ear. I wondered if it would be like that for ever. It has since gone back to it's normal size. The ear was completely numb including the the back side of the ear in the incision area and even on my head above my ear. The scar behind my ear was swollen and my girlfriend thought my ear could still fall off- as if it wasn't attached!- but the swelling there has subsided a lot although it it still tremendously numb. Feeling has returned to the bottom 50% of my ear since my surgery but I'm still waiting for the feeling to return to the top portion. It's been 4 weeks since my surgery and I STILL have a bit of drainage out my ear. At this point it appears to be almost exclusively the gel they put in there to stabilize the wound. This stuff slowly dissolves over time- doc said it could take 6 or more weeks for it to completely drain out. My inner ear doesn't have the major stuffed up feeling that it did but I still can't hear- apparently it's that same gel in there. For the first two weeks or so every morning when I woke up I would pull off my band aid covered cotton ball and it would be covered in what looked like a mixture of various body fluid including blood. My most recent surgery in some ways felt more major than my previous two. I think in part because he was also expanding the ear canal opening which requires removing some softy tissue and also filling in a cavity with displaced soft tissue from behind my ear. The cavity was formed by the radical mastoidectomy I had when I was a kid and caused me to have regular and annoying external ear infections. Doc's hope was to alleviate those as well as help me get my hearing back. For me that's the nerve racking part. I want to know if the surgery worked! Did my titanium implant help?!? Only time will tell. When I did visit the doc for my first post op two weeks ago he said it was healing beautifully and everything was going well. I was glad to hear that because like you I didn't know if all the various things were normal. As far as taste goes I didn't lose any taste sensation this go round but I remember when I was a kid having some weird taste sensations that eventually did go back to normal.I haven't ran in a month even though doc said it would be fine 3 weeks after the surgery- I really don't want to F this up. I'd rather be extra cautious than bump the titanium out of place before it's fully seated (can this happen?). I used to run five days a week so that's been a change, but I know I am on the road to recovery. I want to hear though! I'm really excited about it but don't want to get my hopes up too much.Anyway- I just wanted to let you know you're not alone here. These surgeries suck and they're different for each of us due to our different maladies. 3 months from now you and I won't be thinking about our ears constantly and a year from now the surgery and it's ensuing pain will be a distant memory. Good luck to you!Jimmy previous post: I had my op on the 14 th jan 2011 I am in a bit of pain and can't feel the ear that I had the op on is this normal + I still have stuff coming out of the dressing as well as not being able to taste I hope this won't last for ever. Guest guest
I had my surgery November 2009. The loss of taste was like that for me for several months. My surgeon allowed me to wash my hair after a week. The packing took 6 months to dissolve for me. It felt like I was on an airplane waiting for my ear to pop. My surgeon did reconstruction at the same time but hearing didn't get better for me. Good luck...it does get better.
