Packing in the ear came out in the night? What to do?

My two year old son, is one week post op (typanomastoidectomy), the packing

which we were told to leave in the ear canal until our visit with the doctor on

August 17th came out in the night (either fell out or he messed with it during

the night). He has dried blood on the outside of his ear.

Not sure if this is common or if I should be concerned. It's the weekend, and I

could call the doctor on call, but thought I would post here first. Would love

to hear from some of you parents who have been there!
