Guest guest
Hi , First of all, welcome to this group. It's a great place for support! My 8 year old daughter was diagnosed with a c-toms when she was 5. Hers was congenital and it took almost 8 hours to remove. I was also told it was outpatient, but after that ling surgery I demanded she stay the night and be monitored by them. She went home the next day with minor discomfort. By the end of the day she wanted to get up and play!! She was put on restricted activity( no PE , she was in kindergarten, and no cheerleading) for 4 weeks. It was difficult as she had a little sister, but all in all she had a fast recovery. She had had 2 more surgeries since as the ctoma had come back twice. She now wears a hearing aid in that ear and we are awaiting another surgery to put an implant in her ear. She is now in 2nd grade and doing great in school. Good luck with the surgery!! Kids are so strong and resilient!! I will keep your son and family in my prayers! Take care , Suzanne Sent from iPhone
Guest guest
My daughter was 5 when she was diagnosed with Cholesteatomas in both ears. This was right after her adoption from China. She is now 8 1/2. Hers had gone a long time without intervention so her case was pretty severe. She has had MANY ear surgeries since due to reconstruction & also the cholesteatomas grew back. However, ALL of the ear surgeries were out-patient. Kids are more relaxed at home. There is very little that needs to be done as far as after surgery care. She was able to go back to school almost immediately after each & in ALL cases, she had full energy by the next day. Just have to make sure the ear doesn't get bonked. JinMei is a high energy kid but I think the bandaging helps her remember to take it easy. Best Wishes, Donna DeBoer > > Hi, everyone. Today I found out that my 5 year old son has a c-toma in his right ear. Found out last week that he has moderate hearing loss. Surgery has been scheduled. I was surpised that it is out-patient surgery. Is that the norm? I would feel more comfortable with healthcare professionals watching him through the night. Also, if you have young children, please let me know what your experience has been with recovery, i.e., how long before they could go back to school. The doctor told me no " rough-housing " for at least 3 weeks, so I'll definitely have to isolate him from his twin brother. > > Thank you, > >
Guest guest
My son was diagnosed at age 3 with congenital c-toma (now almost 5). It was small and we haven't had a re-growth yet. However he still has a hole in that ear drum from the original surgery. It was impossible for me to keep him still after surgery!!! I suggest having a new toy to play with/ open every day after surgery for one week. We went home the same day after waiting 3 hours for him to take oral pain med. (Stubborn kid!). I am a nurse so I felt comfortable taking him home. I just slept in his room so that I knew when he needed something. Plus, it freaked me out the thought of him turning onto the affected ear. I held him out of school (mothers morning out) longer than the required amount because I didn't trust him to be gentle with his ear. Good luck! Guest guest
Hi My son is 7 and had his surgery on 2nd March on his left ear, his was done in day surgery. It was a 3 hour operation and they also mended his eardrum and replaced one of his hearing bones. He went in for the op at 10.30am and came out about 2pm. It took him 3 hours to come round completely as he just wanted to sleep, plus they gave him codeine after the op for the pain. We took him home about 6pm and he then ate bowls of Weetabix! I slept in the same room as him for the next couple of nights. We took off his head bandage the next morning ad he was fine in himself. He had a week off school and was back by day 6, but asked him not to play football in the playground for the first few weeks! The packing in the ear was taken off last week by the consultant and he now has an ear spray for 10 days, we go back at the end of the month for a check up. I hope your son's op goes well, it is scarey as a parent as you get them ready and at their ages they know what is going on so be ready to be brave. They were lovely at the hospital and the nurses even fixed his teddy's ear while he was in - ted even had a bandage like my son. Hope that helps Suzanne
