How does it matter whether the surgery was done from back or from inside ? These are two approaches for surgery, which the surgeon selects depending on his past expedience and site of pathology.

EAch one has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Good luck to all

Becauase I have always had surgery from behind the ear never through the ear I

wanted to hear from others who had surgery through the ear and see what their

experiences were like because this will be a whole new experience 4 me and I

wanted to hear from others. Having surgery never gets easier if adds a lot of

stress and anxiety to my life so for me hearing about others who have

experienced the same help me put into perspective what I'm about to go through.

So for me it's personal and I just wanted to know is anyone else have the same

surgery that I'm about to have to remove cholesteatoma.

Hi Jenni I had my cholesteatoma removed in November 1999; the surgeon did a mastoidectomy, tympanoplasty and ossiculoplasty (Canal Wall Down), all through the ear canal, which he widened so to allow better access to clean it using micro-suction in clinic.  I had six stitches, and you can still – but only just – see a small scar just above the ear canal opening, where the ear flap (pinna) joins my head.  I have only one tiny grumble as a result of this: 1.  My operated ear is slightly out of alignment to the other ear – it’s only noticeable when I get new glasses and have to have their arms sorted to fit me and when I place my opened glasses on a desk, for instance, they wobble as they’re not symmetrical because of this.  The operated ear canal is slightly larger than the other one – but this is not noticeable to most folks looking at you as no-one can see both ear canals at the same time.  The ear canal being slightly larger is of course a necessity so that the doctor can see in and hoover successfully – something you will have to have done regularly if you are having a CWD surgery.  Did he say whether he’s doing Canal Wall Up or Canal Wall Down? My recovery took some weeks – 2 weeks off work, then when I tried to go back to work, it was too much too soon (and I only work in an office!)... I got an ear infection and then decided to ease back into things... went back part-time, 4 hours a day, 3 days a week, until after Christmas, by which time I was fully healed and back to normal.  I can’t compare this to any other ear surgery, though, as I haven’t had any other ear surgery; this, fortunately, has been my only Cholesteatoma to date – touch wood! Hope this helps.  Here’s wishing you luck with your surgery!
