Guest guest
, How are you doing on your weightloss since your revision? in Fla Re: Osteoporosis Meds Hi . I, too, have some bone loss as shown by my bone density study. My doctor initially put me on Fosamax, which turned out to be a disaster. My reponse after about 6 weeks was horrible reflux. It was so bad at night I aspirated a couple of times while I was sleeping. Dr. R thought I might have an ulcer. He upped my Prilosec to double dose three times a day and I had an upper scope done after that course of med was completed. No ulcer was seen and no gastritis, but by that time I felt better, too. Now (a year later) my doctor has started me on Boniva, which is the once a month med. I have taken that for two months. Now I am sure I have gastritis again. Not sure if it's related to the medication but Dr. R is treating me with the increased dose of Prilosec to get rid of this. My symptoms this time are not reflux but nausea and occasional vomiting. I really don't think any of the osteoporosis meds are good for us. I am hesitant to try the once a year IV medication as it is so new, but I may end up being one of their most loyal consumers if this once a month med is causing problems. As for low blood calcium, try upping your vitamin D (make sure it's vitamin D3 - cholicalciferol) to 4000 iu a day. That should really help your body use the calcium in a beneficial way. And I have read you can only absorb about 500 mg of calcium at one time so split your daily dose into 500 mg increments. I hope this information helps. That's what we are here for, to help each other out. Take care and keep us (me) posted. Shellie - Kansas RN > > Hi, > I had MGB in 2001 with Dr. R. Have kept off over 200 lbs. I have had the usual problems with anemia, and most recently had a bone density test that shows problems. The Dr. wants to start me on some osteporosis meds. He mentioned Fosamax. I have heard that none of them should be used if you have low blood calcium, which mine is too low. I don't know what to do about it. I take calcium citrate 600 + D several times a day. The televison ads mention that the meds may cause upper digestive problems and I do have reflux sometimes. And I sure don't want to make that worse. Has anyone else been diagnosed with this problem and has taken any osteoporosis meds? I know there are daily, weekly, monthly meds and they have recently come out with one that is given intravenously once a year. Wonder how expensive that it? Anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance to any help! > Custer from VA > 12/20/01 MGB Dr. R > > >
Guest guest
I take boniva and have for 2 years with no problems. I just had a bone scan a couple of weeks ago and we found it isn't working for the bone loss but it's not bothering my tummy. And before anyone throws a fit, I spoke with Dr. R before I started the meds. Cami in IN Re: Osteoporosis Meds Hi . I, too, have some bone loss as shown by my bone density study. Guest guest
Great to hear Shellie!? I am still battling that last 40 pounds, but after losing over 200 it almost seems silly?? You know what I mean? in Fla Re: Osteoporosis Meds Hi . I have lost another 26 lbs since my revision in November for a total of 60 lbs lost. I weigh in at 140 now and wear a size 8. I am very happy I decided to do the revision. And I am very happy Dr. R agreed to do it on a " lightweigt " as he called me. I would love to lose another 10-15 lbs but if I don't I am still happy with my results. Take care. Shellie 5 feet tall 57 years old > > > > Hi, > > I had MGB in 2001 with Dr. R.
