Guest guest
Watercress Apples, broccoli and tomatoes are often cited as the “wonder” fruit and vegetables, but gram for gram, watercress is a better source of vitamins C, B1, B6, K and E, iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese and zinc. Only raw broccoli has more vitamin C and magnesium – but it is much more often eaten cooked in this country. Watercress is brimming with beta-carotene and vitamin A equivalents - which as well as being important antioxidants are also needed for healthy skin and eyes - containing more than four times the amount of the other “wonder” foods. Watercress contains greater quantities of Lutein and Zeaxanthin, types of carotenoids that act as antioxidants, meaning they can mop up potentially damaging free radicals. Quercetin, a type of flavonoid and a powerful antioxidant, is also found in greater quantities in watercress than broccoli and tomatoes. Suzi What is a weed? Guest guest
Watercress I guess that explains why so many people around here live to be 100. Of course they have to have their lard soaked donuts, gravy made with bacon grease, and slabs of meat that weigh twice as much as they do, but they sure gobble down the watercress this time of year. Hmmmm.....;-). I just made some carrot, beet and watercress juice. It was really good. Gloria
Guest guest
We live on the South Coast of NSW, Australia Oh, wow! I didn't realize you were "down under". No, I don't think it would work to send you some watercress. In fact if you lived a few hours away it would still be pretty wilted by the time it got there. I wish everyone had access to all the farmers' markets we have here. They are open all year round, but around this time is when the good stuff really comes out. Plus there's lots of farmland and home gardens and people grow all kinds of stuff and sell it right in front of their homes. I have a teeny tiny herb garden but don't grow veggies. It's so cheap to buy them that I just haven't got the motivation to plant any. Plus my soil sucks! Real rocky. Gloria
Guest guest
Where do you live? Do they have farmers' markets out there? Fresh watercress and dandelion are everywhere here right now but that will disappear in another week or 2. As soon as the season is over (and it's fast) there won't be too much of it grown locally. But it really is good stuff! Wish I could send you some;-).Gloria Hi Gloria We live on the South Coast of NSW, Australia. We are going into winter now and no there aren't many farmers markets and I think Watercress is a bit out there for most in this town. Hardly any organics either unless you want to pay a fortune for it. A few things in the supermarket and one of them has just got rid of their organic section. Went to a farm last week who bring in organic produce to sell but she is not keeping the stuff properly. It is only open Thurs - Sat and we went on Saturday and all the stuff was wilted and the rest just didn't taste good anyway. She did have nice fresh organic medjool dates - yum and macadamia butter that was devine and very moreish. Going to try and get our there today and see what she had fresh on day 1. Carl near Canberra ACT at present and there is heaps of organic markets there and he is going to bring home some stuff tomorrow night. Need to get a place with a yard where we can have a garden and get some of our own produce growing. Only got some herbs in pots. Can't even compost our fruit and vege scraps here. I wish you could send me some too probably get here not looking much different to the stuff they are trying to sell LOL. Tracey
Guest guest
Put it in water and it will root before you can leave the room. It likes running water best, but I bet you could grow it in a bucket and change the water daily.
