Guest guest
Hi Gwenn, Welcome to the forum, sorry, you are by no means a record holder- I was diagnosed with a TSH of 126 and I have heard of one higher than that!- all it really shows is that you have an active pituitary that is screaming at you thyroid to produce more hormones- as an indirect measure it really isn't a very good test. I think that you may still be undermedicated, but you need to look at the list below first. How much T3 you need depends on how well or not you can convert T4 to T3 if at all. You also need to get ferritin, zinc, selenium, D3 ,B12 tested as if any are low it can impair absorption of thyroid meds and prevent T4 to T3 conversion- after all T4 is almost inert. you may also have adrenal insufficiency or candida which will also affect thyroid usage as can mercury- usually from amalgams. thyroid treatment From: gwenngibson@...Date: Mon, 16 Aug 2010 19:31:30 +0000Subject: Re: Re: Advice needed Hi , I am new to this group but would like to share my experience with you. Five years ago I experienced terrrible tiredness, I would get up in the morning and after breakfast wished I could go back to bed. s. Four days later results came back the same. For 2yrs I steadily increased thyroxine to 125mgs, but the pains never went away and the weight gain continued. I am now 13st 8lbs. On reading all about Hypothyroidism I have been on varios web sites who all advise Natural Thyroid replacement or at least some T3. I contacted my GP who agreed to but me on 10mcgs T3 but reduced my T4 to 100mcgs and then 4weeks ago it was increased to 20mcgs in the am. I have however been upping it myself and now take 20mcgms am and 10mcgs 8hrs later. Still no sign of weight loss evanthough I swim 3 thimes a week and work full time. Also shoulders. I was given strong pain killers which just made me feel ill. The doctor then prescribed Amitriptyline, which in high doses is an anti depressant, but at the very low dose of 10mg taken one a night before going to bed, it worked wonders - it does contain lactose if you are allergic to it. In fact after taking it for a few nights I found I didn't have to take it for a few nights after that. I now only take it if the previous night was so bad I couldn't sleep. It had no side effects with me, except that I was a bit extra tired in the morning when I got up, but it soon passed. At such a small dose it just acts as a muscle and nerve relaxant which in turn eases the pain. It is not licensed as a pain killer but often used in low doses like that very successfully. Lilian I am also not in a good state for getting about now even on my mobility scooter, and in turn it is getting me down, plus not getting enough slepp at night due to the pain,

Guest guest
Hi , you need to get the 24 hour salivary adrenal profile done through Genova Diagnostics. Check out our DISCOUNTS FILE (access from the Home page of this web site) and order from there. If you have low adrenal reserve, it will stop your thyroid hormone from getting into the cells properly until you have boosted your adrenal function. The test results will be sent to you in about 10 days, so post the results to us. Also, ask your GP to test your ferritin, vitamin B12, vitamin D3, magnesium, folate, copper and zinc to see whether any of these are low in the reference range. Again, once you have got these results, post them here so we can help with the interpretation. If any of these are low, you will need to supplement to bring their levels up again, because again, no amount of thyroid hormone will work. This often happens after being well for some time, especially if you have undergone a certain amount of stress, which you so obviously have. Luv - Sheila I have had an under active thyroid for around 5 years probably a lot longer. After much changing of doctors I have managed to be sucessfully treated with T3 and have been well for the past few years. T4 didn't agree with me. The past month has been extremely stressful. My husband has had a brain tumour diagnosed and removed. He is now recovering well. I am getting my thyroid symptoms back. Excessive tiredness, lack of physical energy, difficulty concentrating. My question is: is it the stress that is making the symptoms worse or is it completely unconnected to the thyroid. I could be tired because I am doing a lot. I have 2 small children. It does feel like my thyroid symptoms are getting worse again. Has anyone been through anything similar? Can I do anything to help the symptoms or will everything go back to normal in time? Guest guest
Dear In all honesty, the first GP should be reported to the Head of Practice, this is very dangerous to leave a patient with such a high TSH and such a low free T4 without a diagnosis of hypothyroidism and started on treatment. What did he expect to happen in the 6 weeks he told you to wait for a further thyroid function test? You need to ask your new GP to test your ferritin, vitamin B12, vitamin D3, magnesium, folate, copper and zinc. If any of these are low in the reference range, you need to supplement with whatever you are low in. Thyroid hormone can't get into the cells until all these are well placed in the range. Do not accept any doctor telling you that your results are 'normal' because they are within the reference range. You need to get the results yourself with the ref. range and post them here, and we will help with their interpretation. You also need to get tested through Genova Diagnostics to see whether you are suffering with low adrenal reserve. If you are, then you need to start boosting your adrenal function BEFORE you start taking any thyroid hormone replacement. I have attached a document which you should read because this is about the many and varied reasons WHY the levothyroxine might not be working. Luv - Sheila Hi all, am new to this so any help would be greatly appreciated. I have felt unwell for months and went to see my GP, bloods were done and my TSH was 0.05. I was admitted to hospital as I felt so poorly and treated s a pulmonary embolism..I was breathless and felt so ill. I was discharged, feeling exactly the same and went back to see GP who when I pointed out about my thyroid, he suggested getting them repeated in 6 weeks. 25/10/2010 TSH WAS 19.5 AND FREE T4 was 6.0. He rang me to say to repeat them again in 6 weeks but as I felt so ill I went to see another GP. Bloods were taken 08/11/2010 and tsh was 17.32, free T4 was 7.1. She wanted to start me on 100mcgs of Thyroxine but then decided on 50mcg. I suffered from palpitations and chect pain and BP was 150/110. I rang her Monday and she suggested dropping dose to 25mcgs which I have. My head feels woolly, I ache all over and just don't feel right! I cannot carry on like this. I feel that when people are talking to me it takes ages for it to register and me hear what they say. 1 of 1 File(s) Why thyroid hormone stops working.doc
Guest guest
We need to know what the reference range is . Never post results without these, as we need to know whether they are at the bottom, the middle, the top, or even outside of the reference range. Please will you also delete messages already read and leave just a small portion of what you are responding to before clicking 'Send' as it is very frustrating scrolling through all these messages for those who read directly from the forum web site or who receive a Daily Digest. Guest guest
Yes if your son is a candidate for the cast I believe it is a better choice! In fact my almost 22 mos old son is a participant in a study to hopefully help further prove that casting is the superior method for children (ones that would be casting candidates). Levi is super active...in fact when I asked about physical therapy for him once he got casted to help him relearn things/keep up core muscles the PA laughed & said he is whole heartily a PT advocate & it has great benefits, but with how active Levi is it would be a waist of our time/$. Levi hasn't missed a beat. Within days I knew he was going to get along just fine & 3 weeks life was totally normal again. I'm sure it'd go faster for your child as they are already used to a brace. Please look into EDF Mehta casting! As it was explained to us by several Docs...bracing was more of a method for helping hold/slow down a progressive curve until the child was big enough for surgery, but casting could potentially offer a cure. No one ever used the word " cure " with us when discussing a brace! Best of luck, Amber mommy to Levi 1st cast SLC > My son was diagnosed with scoliosis when he was 6 mnths old put in a brace > nov. 2010 the worse his curve was 49 degrees 4 mnths ago it was 36 with > his brace on. Guest guest
My son was braced 2 years before starting mehta casting. We prefer cast to brace hands down. The only activity it will limit him in is bathing! He has learned to run, ride a bike , and a scooter all in cast. We live in the south so it's hot and the only drawback is keeping him inside in the summer, but it's for his best interest. Docs like numbers to be 50ish and under for cast sucess. Braces only hold for the most part but casts can reverse the curve if not CURE scoli. My son has been in cast fir 10 + months now and we are chugging along. Make sure you read up on the proper Mehta process like solid cast block no less than a year ect. Don't be scared. In my opinion it is the best option for Most children. Actually in my opinion it is the only solution to helping our kids... I wanted to cast at 2 and our doc wasn't a believer. We switched docs and finally got our first cast at 4. We missed the window but we are still making great progress and will continue to cast another year if it works out. Please don't wait.... At least learn more about it and start taking steps to finding a Mehta trained doctor. There is no time like the present. I will always regret not pushing for a cast at 2 or switching docs sooner. You can't turn back the hands of time. Don't make the same mistake I did. Tame Sorry to be aggressive but it's just so important parents know what they are up against. Guest guest
Completely agree with Tame. Our sons situations re scoli are very similar. Noah's 1st doc wanted to brace and watch and wait. We did this for 2 yrs from 1 to 3.5. My Noah got cast just 2 months shy of his 4th birthday to help his 25 degree rotation and 2 curves that progressed from teens to 42 and 46. Within 8 months of Mehta casting we were at 16 degree rotation with 36/42 on curves. We took a brief summer break but have been back in for almost 4 months now. Casting is completely the way to go. We play in snow, wrestle, ride bikes, go to bouncy houses, you name it - just no pool or full tubbies. I highly recommend Mehta and this is the BEST support group thru good times and tough ones. We are so thankful for Mehta and ISOP! Guest guest
Please go to the file section of CAST to dwnld/read the original, published medical journal titled " Growth as a corrective force in the Early Treatment of progressive infantile scoliosis, " Mehta, MD, FRCS. Another great tool in understanding this corrective method is to view A New Direction dvd which can be found in the youtube section of www.infantilescoliosis.org (in 3 parts). These 2 items combined with the experience and knowledge here on CAST will help you to better understand the necessary principles of this gentle and permanent treatment modality. A child with PIS has a window of opportunity to grow straight by this method and you are on the right track in doing research and leaving no stone unturned in trying to properly advocate for your baby. Please let us know if you have any more questions and how we can help.
